Researchers from the National Cancer Institute found that smokers actually live longer on average, than people dealing with obesity. They compared normal weight smokers to extremely obese non-smokers and found that obesity shortens life spans more than smoking.

BMI is a garbage stat. I would have to weigh 145 or so to be at a healthy BMI.

I haven't weighed that since I was 14. Training for sports in the weight room put on enough muscle where I'll only have an acceptable BMI by amputation or horrible disease

Same here... Mine says 197 (6'3") to be at the very top end of healthy. Conversely, one could be all the way down to 156 and be at the low end of the "healthy" range. As it is, I'm just barely still only overweight at 229 (til Lunch today) I'll grant I'm still a bit overweight. I don't think many would use the term obese.

For reference - Adrian Peterson of the Vikings is one BMI % from being obese.

The measurement only compares weight to height. No other factors come into play.

I think its more that a lot of overweight people don't like to be considered "obese". I'm 5'9, 210lbs, and am considered obese according to BMI.
