Hoiberg Raise - now makes $2.6M

I agree with the salary increase.

To play devil's advocate - why increase it? His contract was already set, he got his bonuses from the tourney, and if he wants to leave it's not a money issue (since no other terms changed).

Money's not an issue. But, that doesn't mean that if he's not compensated what he and his agent feel is his market value, that it couldn't become an issue. He was what? 8th in the Big XII for salary this year? The last thing you want to do with a hometown hero is make it seem like you're taking him for granted. He's performed like one of the top coaches in the conference. Pay him like it. Don't let something that's not an issue become one.

Let's say we reach the Elite 8 next year. Are we talking about annual raises from us with no concessions from him?

That's a bridge you cross if and when that happens. Obviously, there is a limit to what the school can/will do, but each year will be different, and that limit will probably change based on a lot of factors.

I love Fred and know you have to pay to play but it is hard to get excited about someone now making 10x more than needed to live like a king in Central Iowa. Oh, and I am bummed veisha got $hi+canned too.

VEISHEA was cancelled. I'm sure veisha will still go on this weekend.

I think it was a deserved raise but I think it could have waited a year. It's not a guarantee that he stays but it's very unlikely that he leaves this year with how the year went and with all the guys coming back. I think next year would of been a good time to give the raise as long as the team got as far if not deeper in the tourney.

It's kind of nice that this happened right before BDJ comes to town. "We have an NBA quality coach, making NBA type money, who will help you get to the NBA."

P.S. Why is the BDJ thread locked?

He said "OMW" on twitter and people kept spamming the thread with fake phrases like "on my weiner" to explain what it meant.

Re: Hoiberg receives a raise!

@IASTATEAD: Coach Hoiberg receives $600K raise. Average salary of $2.6M will rank him in Top 10 of public University bb coaches. Press release this AM.

Well, the old days of the B.S. argument people made about Iowa State not being able to pay to keep their coaches around is dead and over with.

If Fred ever even does goes to the NBA, I think it is a long ways a way and a long shot, but always still possible. The chances of him ever going to another NCAA team: 0.01%. I feel we've got the next ISU legendary coach locked up for the long haul. It's good to know, we need our Coach K, Coach Izzo, etc. A long tenured, successful coach that everyone wants to play for. So awesome knowing we are a Sweet Sixteen, at minimum - Top 20 ranked team, with a Big 12 champ trophy, and Nat'l championship caliber talent after only 4 years of Hoiball.

Now Fred is paid like a Top 10 coach, which I believe he is and deserves. What is the real advantage of waiting one more year and let Fred at least listen to calls from the NBA? 600K? Yes it is a lot of money but, is that really in the grand scheme of things considering what Fred has accomplished and the potential of this program and the ISU brand. I wouldn't.
One thing we have to remember is the Minnesota T-Wolves job is almost certian to come open. He is familiar with the franchise and the Mpls area, and there are rumors that Flip Saunders top two choices would be Izzo or Hoiberg. If there was going to be a pro frachise able to lure Fred away to be their coach that would be the number one threat. In the end I think Fred would have stayed but if you're Pollard why even risk it.

in 2037 or so he may hand the keys to coach babb or coach niang ;-)

Fred is Iowa State. Since he was a kid he has proven countless times to be one of the best assets the University has ever had, and you need one more year so you can base it on a 3 game sample? You want to leverage his loyalty and risk what he means to the University just to save want amounts to chump change?

Big thanks to Randy Pete for telling all Cyclone fans what we need to do.

No kidding. Fred is a still a bargain at a $2.6 million average. BARGAIN.

He's a coaching star. If he wasn't 'ours' we could never dream of hiring him. The last thing we want to do is take him for granted.

Today is a fantastic day!

Interview with CBS Sports correspondent Willy Twocoach Jr.
"Thirty three years ago, Fred, you came back to your alma mater to do a job. Now, after four national championships, sixteen conference titles, 20 B12 tournament champions, two of your kids being college AAs, one of the boys now your main assistant and one in the NBA, did you think it would all work out this way?"

Thats so unrealistic. He'll have way more than 20 Big 12 tournament titles. Come on, man.
