Basketball Student Ticket Policy To Remain The Same

I'm not sure why anyone thought it would. As long as the student section remains half full for most games other thank Kansas and Iowa, it will continue to be oversold.

As it should. I thought they screwed up badly with the new student section after how full it was for Michigan and Iowa but we never saw those crowds for the student section again..even for KU. People will complain when they don't get in the biggest non-con and maybe a Big 12 game or 2 but it is embarassing that a ranked team all season had a 3/4 full or less student section for most of the games.

Based on this season, with a good schedule and a top 15 team the students still didn't fill it up, so I would oversell it even more.

If students won't make the section full, then oversell all you want.

There are some facts in the AD letter that I didn't know, such as the only game to max out on students in the last two years was Iowa this season. I thought it also happened for Michigan and KU. The letter says that a student could have walked up at tip time and gotten right in to every game except for this year's Iowa game. Thus, it makes sense to not change the policy because they don't expect it to happen next year since the Iowa game is away.

Still, it wouldn't surprise me if JP also has some sort of scheme for walk-up General Admission tickets, particularly after a pattern is in place.

That's where I think a lot of people expected change. A last minute type way to fill up that top section for non marquee games.

I suppose that this would not be a change to the Student Ticket policy, but a change to include a General Admission option for the public that would supplement and not infringe on the privilege of students to attend. For instance, if they only sold 50% of the space in the student section that is unused 15 minutes before tip off, they are probably safe in terms of the number of students who will still show up.

According to the email, the ONLY game that a student could not get into at tip was the Iowa game. Every other game, a student could have walked up to the doors at tip, and been let in.

My son got into Iowa game but was in the standing room only part and holding up a girl so she could see. Any idea how large the student section is when counting the standing room?

Here are the numbers the email provided:

Because student attendance at the men’s basketball games is critical to our success, we recently met with our student advisory group that is comprised of leaders from 10 different student groups on campus. During those meetings we shared the following information with the student leaders.

  1. During the 2011-12 basketball season [three season ago], actual student attendance was 1,087 students per game. That meant, on average, there were nearly 1,500 empty seats in the 2,500-seat student section.
  2. Following the 2011-12 basketball season, we worked with the student advisory group to create the current policy with the goal to increase student attendance. That policy mirrored the student policy of several other major collegiate basketball programs and included the decision to oversell the student section in order to provide as many students as possible the opportunity to attend games.
  3. During the first year of the new policy, student basketball attendance increased by just over 300 students per game, or nearly 30%.
  4. During this past year, student basketball attendance increased to nearly 1,600 students per game, almost a 60% increase from the average attendance prior to the implementation of the current policy.
  5. During the past two years, there was only one game (Iowa this year) where not all of the students who wanted to attend the game were able to do so. Furthermore, the Iowa game this season was the only one in which a student could not have arrived at tip time and entered the game without waiting in line.
Based on this information and the discussion we had with the various student leaders on the student advisory group, we have decided that the ticket policy will remain the same for next year. Additionally, we will keep the same price point for the sixth year in a row.

Back in my day students filled the house, we walked 3 miles to get to Hilton through ice, rain, and snow. It didn't matter if we had finals the next day...and if there was a dance marathon it was most likely that 1)we didn't even know about it, and 2)we wouldn't miss a game of Hoiball to go to it if we did know about it. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I think the most logical policy would be getting rid of football/basketball combo passes, instituting a lottery system with loyalty preference points for "premium" games, and developing a way for students to easily transfer tickets if they can't attend the game.

This. We're basically walking away from more money, aren't we?

In fairness, the students did fill it up for the Okie St game and were terrific. But everyone knows we could sell all of those balcony seats to the general public. In fact, I am hoping we sell out Hilton with season tickets next year.
