I was just wondering how many people grew up in a Hawkeye family since lot of us grew up Hawkeye fans by default and secondly have some people become completely Iowa State fans. (no more Hawkeye fan when they do not play ISU)
I grew up in CR. My grandpa graduated from Iowa. Parents graduated from Iowa. Younger brother graduated from Iowa. (uncles, etc) The rest of the family defaults to Iowa. I have once cousin who graduated from Iowa State who lives out of state plus a step-brother.
Its gotten a bit more divided with the rise of ISU Athletics and the conference wars too. Hayden Fry and the string of football victories was a lifetime ago (for college athletics) and it seems a lot of Hawks are clinging to it for superiority.
My Dad is the most reasonable. The morning of the Tulsa game last year he purposely ordered the sports package on Dish (Eastern Iowa Comcast Chicago) when we visited so I could see the Hawkeye game and he was the only who who didn't complain about flipping between the two.
My brother loves the term CyClowns and I'll let that pass. I can give my grandparents a pass. (Did you live in the Quadrangle in Iowa City?)
Any one else actively putting down Iowa State makes me almost angry and I rarely get angry at sports.
Early in my college years and post-graduation (2002-2008) I still pulled for Iowa against all other schools, but a few years after graduating I've found myself totally indifferent to Iowa and its gotten to the point where I actively root against them sometimes. I first remember laughing out loud at a Hawkeye loss against Northwestern State, but that might have been more a function of hating Alford and I last remember actively watching a Hawkeye game and caring during the Ricky Stanzi run a few years ago.
Part of it is living in Bloomington, IN and my wife graduating from IU. Big 10 allegiance has shifted a bit. I think a lot of it also has to do with how a lot of Hawkeyes fans treated the possible implosion of the Big 12 by actively ridiculing Iowa State and wanting them in an athletics black hole. I know not all Hawkeyes fans wanted this, but unfortunately that's what bubbles to the top of my Facebook and twitter feeds.
To me it outside (and sometimes inside) of my family it's no longer friendly any more. It's Iowa State or Iowa no more I'll cheer for both...
