Really? How do you qualify for a job with ESPN if you don't know the teams and mascots for at least all the power conferences. I have heard this so many times lately by network announcers it is getting old. Especially when the show is called College Basketball Live.

My first year in Iowa I confused Cedar Rapids with cedar falls. The more you learn the less you'll make that mistake. You'll never hear Vitale or Franchilla make that mistake.

What's old is a new thread every time it happens. It's always going to happen...move on.

big deal, i have also been called my little brothers name a ton of times in my lifetime
While I agree that this happens a LOT & we don't need to always point out every instance, I think the OP has a good point in this case. It is COLLEGE BASKETBALL LIVE and it is their JOB to report correct information on a subject matter of which they should be "experts." If they can't get some of the simplest things correct, they should seriously consider if they are in the correct line of work, IMHO. I am a social studies teacher. I certainly don't know everything about all the Soc Studies disciplines, but I make sure that I have a very good grasp of the concepts / material that I am teaching in my courses. If I can't present that info correctly to my "audience," then I should look for another line of work.

If you're going to report on college basketball or college football, you should be able to name every university you cover and their name without messing up. I can do this and I don't talk about it on TV. It's really sad if someone messes up a team from the big 10 and big 12. I'd understand if it was teams from the MEAC or Southland, but the Iowa State Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes? Teams that are on national TV, ESPN, BTN, ABC, etc. on a twice a week basis?? And both in the top 25? It's really bad to mix them up. Plus it's just rude to call a person by the wrong name, just as it is to call a team the wrong name. (If you don't know or are unsure, then don't say it.) I would never congratulate a Colorado fan by saying the Rams played a good game...People may think I am being hard on someone, but seriously IT'S THEIR JOB and if I'm inaccurate in my job -- I get fired...

BTW our programs are going if any teams name is getting mixed up it should be the iowa cyclones. Btw agree with op. When your on a show like college basketball live you should at least know bcs school's especially on the top 25. Heck I've known most the schools since I was 8

I could probably name the mascot and/or school colors of about 250 of the 300 some odd division 1 basketball teams, and my job has nothing to do with sports. I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch about it, but I agree that they really should know this as its their job. That said, it's on ESPNU, so it's probably just some random waitress they pulled in from Applebee's at lunch that day to host the show.

My girlfriend sent me a text yesterday morning to let me know how her Monday night trivia night at the bar went (pretty serious brain power, these trivia teams, one is all med students at Case, hers all Case college professors and post docs). She made a point to emphasize one question: What university's athletic teams are referred to as Cyclones?

Still smiling about it.

i dont get super worked up over it but it does irritate me mostly because stupid hok fans love it and on the OP ill agree....its their freaking JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure why hawk fans like it? It's pretty much as big of a slap to the face to them as it is to us.

This is as bad as when the people in my condo meet my dog, Rocky (which is obviously a male name), and then the next five hundred times they see him and say "good girl." It's a daily occurrence no matter how many times I correct them.

chadly82, hok fans love it because they wish they were as good as us and confusing them with a better team makes them happy.

I believe you've already answered your own question good sir.

So don't keep us in suspense. Did they get it right?

I don't recall ever hearing them mix up schools from Kansas or Arizona or anywhere else.
