Student Section

Did we have this problem last year? Or is it new this year to have so much of the balcony student section empty?

I guess my point is simply this. If we want to call Hilton one of the best home floors in the country, there better not be a block of 1500 seats sitting empty. We all like to poke fun at Iowa's "sellout streak" for football, but how is this any different? We sell (and oversell) seats of several hundreds of people who don't show up and want to talk about the money side of things?

I will admit, I'm not sure what the answer is-- but luckily I'm just some idiot poster on CF and I don't have to come up with a solution. JP is the AD making a nice chunk of change to be able to come up with a solution. When you have a top 20 team and an elite coach, coupled with an energized fanbase, there is no reason to have empty seats. None. It's now incumbent on JP to figure out the solution.

I find the nearly empty sections to be blasphemous, an insult to the sacred shrine of Hilton Coliseum and to the memory of Johnny Orr. When the national anthem plays, everyone looks up to the star spangled banner ... which is hanging over four nearly-empty sections? At Hilton Colisuem in February, right before a Top 20, Big 12 matchup on national TV? It makes us look no better than the schools that consistently have poor attendance.

Now that CFH has brought back quality basketball, I think the athletic department has a duty to tackle this issue so that it doesn't persist into next year. Do whatever it takes. Brainstorm with the students, brainstorm with the alumni, but above all else, fix this problem.

~900 seats in the upper deck student section. Students are allocated 2500 seats. About 1700 showed up for Texas.

I think the AD should still sell the 3500 tickets for 2500 seats. Require a check in 5-7 days in advance to claim your tickets. Students still are seated first come first serve day of game. Then have a website where anybody can purchase the non claimed seats for $15-20 a ticket. It is more revenue. I know some say it is not enough to make building this system, but you only have to build the system once and it should pay out for years to come. Also, how much does a family of four spend on concessions each game compared to four students? I have 2 kids and I have a hard time going to a game and not spending at least $25.

I think it is an easy fix, then if the students don't fill the upper section, nobody cares. There will always be the family of four to take the seats. At least while Hoiberg is the coach.

sorry, but not even the lower section was full. not even close. I would say closer to 1200 showed up. But like I said before, The 1200 made some noise.

Another solution for the WVU/OSU games would be to sell about 300 tickets to the general public as general admission to the student section.

This has been done during the McDoormat Era.

This seems like a reasonable idea. JP cares a lot about image and I don't think he wants us to have big empty sections while we get good national media attention. For instance, he made sure we were on the side facing the cameras for the Liberty Bowl. And it would generate a little more revenue.

I hope they sell 500+ general admission tickets to the public on a first come, first in basis for the last two games.

I think to prove a point the AD should sell 500-600 General Admission tickets to the last 2 games to fill those spots. Kind of like they did against Baylor a few years back for Senior Day

Edit: Looks like I'm not the only one that thinks this

SOLD!

I know I would have to buy drinks, popcorn, and candy for my dudes.

You could really tell when students sat during timeouts how many open lower level seats there were.

All Sports Pack is dumb. Hillside football tickets ($99) + Corner Balcony tickets ($125) = $224

Savings of $26 compared to the all sports pack, can still sit in student section with ISU ID, and that's not even considering the perks of a guaranteed seat for every game and break games (which are easily sold if you're out of town).

The attendance, other than the student section, seemed pretty good tonight. Anyone else think traffic was a major bear tonight? I have never seen it this bad. The wife and I even left Ankeny about 15 minutes before we usually do for 6 pm games and did not get to our seats til 2 minutes into the game. There were some people in my section that did not get to their seats until halfway through the first half. Traffic was backed up on Highway 30 pretty good too.

Back on topic here. The student attendance is pitiful. I went to college during the Mcdermott years and I'm sorry to say that the student attendance this year is almost as bad. What the heck? Top 25 team for a majority of the year and students are not going to games. Something has to be wrong.

I left Ankeny at 4:45 and barely got to my seat 4 min before tip. Not sure why traffic was that bad, was it commuting students leaving that caused a mess? Or people getting off work at 5?

It is not dumb if you go to other sports in addition to football and men's basketball.
