Student Section

JP showed his hand when he tweeted his displeasure with the students a month or so ago. Last night had to be the "straw that broke the camel's back." Top 25 matchup, gorgeous day, 6:00 start... no reason for students not to be there. It's not worth selling all those tickets to fill up for the Iowa and Kansas game. Take the upper section student section away and sell them as $125 season tickets.
Very simple math he'd be losing a boatload of money by doing that. You're selling those tickets for $175 already with 3,500 students at $125/each for $2,500 seats.

And the student fees are a big deal with the University working to keep tuition as low as possible. There's a few million dollars there that's "free" money for the AD. You don't bite the hand that feeds by restricting your #2 offering and giving them reason to either keep the student fee the same or decrease it.

If a move is made it won't be for financial reasons....it'll be for perception reasons because making it make financial sense is going to be very difficult.

This is an excellent way for the AD to lose a ton of money. Not only will they lose revenue from student ticket sales, where they can sell those tickets twice, but I would be absolutely shocked if the students just went along with this instead of going after the athletics fee that all students pay. The AD would be opening a huge can of worms.

Most students don't want to pay the athletic fee. But that won't change them getting charged for it regardless. If anything the athletic fee will continue to rise like everything else on the student's bill.

Makes me chuckle when people pipe up "It pisses me off to see seats open when I'd drop the money to sit there." Congratulations....that seat is already paid for...twice no less.

Like I said last week, adding barriers to entry isn't the solution for getting more students into the games. You take the fringe fans who do show up because they have tickets out of the equation if they have to do additional work to be able to attend. Those are your future donors.

I have season tickets. Should I have to register that "I'm going to be attending XXXXXX game" so they don't resell my tickets? Why are students an exception in that case? I don't like that argument but it's completely valid. They paid for the same seat I did and there's isn't guaranteed.

It makes you laugh when die-hard ISU fans are upset that they can't buy a ticket to the game, yet there are hundreds of seats sitting open, glaringly obvious to all??

I don't understand the people who say the students are paying for a ticket just like any other season ticket holder... What are they paying, ~100 bucks? What do student season tickets go for these days? As a student you get a big discount. You don't have to donate and you get a really cheap season ticket. With where our program is right now this is unacceptable.

Whatever contest Cyclone Alley is in right now, they do not deserve to win and I personally wouldn't vote for them.
Well, you know, there's that whole tuition thing too

I know a few students that are involved with this and I think they would be quick to make the athletics fee a huge issue if the students got "slighted" in their eyes. It would likely become a news story for the Regents to weigh in on, who already required all of the public schools to stop using state dollars for athletics. The AD does not want to risk that... They will not open that door.

Why or how could the students go after an athletics fee based on a lower number of available student seats? I'm not sure how the fee works but if it's a fee charged on those who actually buy student athletic tickets obviously if a student is not buying tickets they won't be charged the fee. If it's a fee charged on all students regardless of whether they buy tickets or not, over 50% of students already don't attend any sporting events. How is losing a few student tickets in Men's Basketball going to tip the scale when already over 50% of students pay the fee with no benefit?

As for overselling, it's just a matter of setting the right price. If they oversell student tickets by 40% it's an easy solution: price the additional seats at 140% of current student tickets. No loss in revenue.

There are ALWAYS tickets available if you're willing to buy them. Explain how it's the AD's fault that you aren't willing to spend what the market says tickets into the game are worth?

Tuition has absolutely nothing to do with ticket prices.

Hard to sell concessions to empty seats.

Change the upper deck ends from 125 per seat, to 150 per seat and give the entire upper deck to the general public. (including students who would want to buy them)

It's charged to all students. By removing the #2 product consumed by those students the vocal minority are going to lose their minds over it and you're going to have a mess in President Leath's office...which I'm sure he doesn't want to deal with. Jamie would be taking a huge risk in doing something that's very likely to create a mess his boss has to deal with. It only takes one schmuck on GSB to turn it into a much bigger issue than it is.

This is why we need a points system for big games. You should have to earn the right to a seat to Iowa, KU, etc.

I completely agree with this. It would improve attendance for all of the games and make life easier for students who try and go to every game and class.

Pollard is getting more money by selling the seats to multiple students than he would cheap others.

I am always amazed when we get the bill of some of the strange fees the student's pay. My son is technically a "senior" with his number of credits even though he is a junior for purposes of getting through his major. He had a "senior" fee this term, so I suppose he will have that fee show up for three different semesters. My husband and I can't really afford donation levels to get season tickets with helping our kids with school but we all get to pay these fees all the time. We were looking forward to a tuition freeze this year and discovered that his tuition went up by over a third because he was an upperclassman in engineering, The all-sports is a money saver for our son because he goes to a lot of events but he is taking his chances as far as getting into KU and Iowa since he does go to class.

Tuition has absolutely nothing to do with ticket prices.

Clarification: Say a typical family of 4 would have liked to go see last night's game. Most families look to the ISU ticket office to purchase tickets. They are not going to go seeking out tickets on StubHub, etc. that are over face value. They are told that the game is sold out. They see on t.v. that there are entire sections empty. They aren't happy.

Agree with this, you don't want the wannabe future politicians in GSB catching any wind of something like this.

Another solution for the WVU/OSU games would be to sell about 300 tickets to the general public as general admission to the student section.

This has been done during the McDoormat Era.

It has absolutely everything to do with it. Why else would student tickets be discounted and not require a donation?

Students are already taking out loans just to go to school and don't have a steady, substantial income.
