Student Section

Well, the student section did to McGary many of the same things that W Va did to Kane and were blasted here for it. Also blasted for not doing such things. No win situation apparently.

Understand your point, but there's tons of things that can be fun, supportive, crazy, even rowdy that doesn't include saying " f***McGary" . So that's why things aren't the same? We took the kiddos f-bombs away? Oh brother.

BTW you're an idiot

If you're going to throw out names like that, then at least back up your reasoning. Plenty of other posts are saying the same thing. But you are the first to call me an idiot. Glad you voiced your opinion, as I did mine. So which part of my post was the most idiotic? Leaders? Work at a high school where its fun to get the student body pumped up for the team. Must be my misguided expectations to have that at a university.

according to cyclone alley and everyone else we are "supposed to be"

"hilton magic" doesn't exist when we play scrappy teams like Tech. It exists when we play the Kansas' and Oklahoma States of the Big 12... They will never show up to teams like Tech and TCU. Again... I point to the Dukes' and Syracuse's of the basketball world... their student sections show up to every damn game. loud proud, plowed.
I agree... It seems as if 90% of the crowd is there to just be entertained.
FINE! ...enjoy the game all you want, BUT, when you listen to the players and CFH after almost every game they give major praise to our fans. They constantly talk about how we have the best fans in the entire country, and how they "feed" off that energy. They make the fantastic claim that WE the crowd noise is what gives the Cyclones the needed edge, and boost in their confidence in all of our home victories. Every possession we need to be screaming or cheering or constantly making some kind of noise to either boost the confidence of our players or "Boo & heckle" our opponents when they have the ball, until our lead is fairly comfortable. And should the opponent start clawing back into the game, that is when we start it up all over again. (Thus Hilton Magic!)

There just aren't enough student that want to go to games. It's really that simple. JP has got to sell less student tickets so we can fill that upper level with cheap tickets that families and cheapskates can use.

This is my third year at Iowa State and I think today was the worst crowd I have ever been apart of while in college. I have been to non-conference games with more buzz than today. I don't know what the deal is but it's embarrassing trying to start a CYCLONE....POWER chant only to have 40% of the students participate. People make fun of the band, but good lord... they were the most enthusiastic fans there today and without them the atmosphere might have been on the same level as the atmosphere at a football school.

If the student section doesn't show up Tuesday night, every upper deck student section seat should be sold to the public for the rest of the year. Every. Single. One.

Comparing to Cameron Indoor is... interesting... That is a small gym, under 10k attendance. One of the most historically great teams. Nearly always a top ten team. And as recently as 2012, they were having issues filling up their student section. They would get an average of 600-700 students for 1200 seats. I don't have recent numbers, but I assume they still have a similar issue.

I see that CycloneFanatic running right on schedule. T-minus one month until the next "White helmets?" thread. Good job boys.

I am so sick of these threads - partially because of my own annoyance with the subject matter, but partially because they are like clockwork after every single home game against a team not named Iowa, Kansas, or someone ranked in the top 15.

Some of you act like every other arena is packed with students for every game regardless of opponent. That is not the case, even at schools as elite as Duke. Others have made the comparison to Kansas and asked why our students aren't like that. When the majority of our student ticket holders are casual fans (at best), come back to compare their attendance at basketball games after our ninth-straight conference title with some Final Fours and a national title mixed in.

You can over-nostalgize your own college days from the 80's and 90's all you want, but if you need a group of people to talk down on to make yourself feel superior, find a better one than Iowa State students.

Crowd standing...mostly started by the crowds on the side today.
Incredibly stupid. Were you even at the game. Any game this season? The student section is always standing during game play.
Why no signs anymore? Half-full Baylor even had those tonight.
Stupid. We have never had signs for bottom feeder or even middle of the pack B12 teams. Plus Baylor was packed. Not sure why you say half full
Chants coming out of timeouts..why not?
Stupid. This has never happened. Why make a petty complaint about it now?
Our guys deserve a homecourt advantage with a boisterous, supportive crowd...win or lose.
Stupid. Have we ever shown negative cheers towards our own team? Ever? Even when we're losing? That's only ever been for KU games. And negative cheers were directed towards opposing players or refs in those games, not our own players.
Not to mention recruits that are there experiencing it.
Stupid. Recruits regularly say our home court is one of the best.

I'm pretty vocal when it comes to pointing out that our student section is completely made up of nerds. Like literally everyone of them looks like they wear Arizona jeans with new balance shoes. What is the deal with that? My friends and I rewind the game at half time and just laugh at screenshots. At football there seems to be a bunch of non virgins and normal looking girls, where the hell they go?

Side note: who was the neon nerd in front row today wearing neon shoes and neon shorts. If that wasn't bad enough, his chubby little hairless legs were blindingly white.

I kinda noticed that today too to be honest. The girls were normal looking that they showed at the game. I consider myself a nerd but you're right. :shrugs:

I'm gonna guess you were wearing your varsity letter jacket as you typed this comment.

This is exactly right. People just don't care anymore for some strange reason. Success has seemed to have the opposite effect on interest this year. And for people saying that at least the student section isn't as bad as it was during the McPast, not so fast. I was there for that and ever since the K-State game I would say the student section has reached that level and that includes games against two top 25 teams.

One of the most glaring signs (other than poor attendance for this top 20 team) is during time outs for big runs. Everybody stands up and claps to keep the energy going. Then you look at the student section and you literally see about 90% sit down get their phones out or just twiddle their thumbs.

Here are several reasons for diminishing attendance at The Hilton:

1- young people no longer participate in "competitive" sports. Think participation "trophies."

2- admit it ... They are techno geeks with independent lives around their eye phones. People and crowds are irrelevant outside their little hand held escape device.

3- nothing to play for ... Kansas will always win the conference With their Mickey Ds ... Football is almost as bad.

4- cannot identify with the players and some of their antics.

5- losing critical games and never overcoming the "we didn't play for x minutes".

6- no blowout wins

7- the games are too painful to watch (see 6 above).

8- I concession "gouging" prices. Ridiculous.

9- we beat Iowa ... So who cares.

10- over selling and hyping the team. Reality bites when the Clones can't win on the road except for the bottom feeders.

11- getting embarrassed on national tv against WV ... Players played like whimps ... Totally out if the game. Shameful.

12- women's basketball is truly dis functional right now. No chemistry and lack of intensity like we've seen in the past.

This is true. The grizzled collegiate alcoholic seems to be a thing of the past
