I'm a firm believer that the only way to make these PART TIME sports officials better, is to pay them more and make them FULL TIME NFL officials so they can then concentrate ONLY on officiating NFL football!!!!! The NFL officials are the only professional sports officials of the top sports that are NOT full time!

Why does it matter? You lose money on a game? They have instant replay to correct mistakes.

I don't know all the details but trust me, these guys are probably as close to full-time as you can get. Whatever their "other jobs" are can't get much attention with how much time they have to put into camps, clinics, etc.

Understand your point but it is kind of an apples to oranges comparison. NBA officials might have 70+ games a year plus playoffs, whereas NFL refs only work 17 weeks and possibly playoffs. With that being the case, I'm not sure you could pay them enough over those ~ 17 weeks to make it worthwhile to give up other careers. Making it a requirement that it be their only job might only serve to reduce the pool of people wanting to be NFL refs and a smaller pool could mean even lower quality. I'm also not sure how making them full-time would magically eliminate the prospect of human error. Humans are fallible no matter what.

With the benefit of instant replay I think the NFL officials are right much more than they are wrong. I don't think making them "full-time" would change much of anything.

Refs make something like $200K per year. So, even though it's part time, it's not like they're being paid minimum wage.

You and your silly logic.

Also, you failed to use 3 or more exclamation points, which makes your post useless!!!!!

The National Football League (NFL) pays referees anywhere from $25,000 to $70,000 per season. When you consider that the league plays 16 games and referees are considered part-time employees, you get a better sense of the disparity.
The amount you gave applies to MLB umpires. And it ranges from $100,000 - $200,000 based on years of service or seniority.

MLB umpires work 10 times as many games.

So your point is instead of paying for someone to suck part time, you want to pay them to suck all the time?

I want them to only concentrate on officiating NFL games! Anybody with any common sense knows the more time you study, the better chance they have to learn. I bet the officials would not have "missed" the illegal formation on the Chargers when they lined up illegally with 7 players (over load) on one side of the line (which the rule was recently changed). Most of these officials are lawyers, accountants, etc, etc, etc. Pay them well enough to fully concentrate on the rules, intent of rules, enforcements, case plays, etc, and they can only improve upon their quality of officiating.

Actually MLB umpires do get time off during the season based upon seniority.

NFL refs work 1 day a week between August and December. Do you really think having them work "full time" all year is going to improve their performance enough to make a noticeable difference? Human mistakes are part of the game.

You actually think the NFL refs work only 1 day a week between August & December? You have no clue my fellow CF friend. They arrive on Thursday. Study films, rules, tendancies just like teams do. They WORK more than 1 day a week. There is A LOT of prep work before GAME DAY.

At some point thought more prep will not help, and I'm not sure making them work five or six days out of the week will necessarily help their to be less missed calls.

So what - no personal life? No hobbies? No family? Are you so dedicated to your job that the only thing in your life is your job?

It's football, and the refs are going to suck regardless, so go get yourself a life.

OK, 3 days a week. Not sure what the big deal is. They get most of the calls right, correct some with instant replay and a few are entirely missed. So what is the big deal here?
