Jerry Palm's Bracketology:

NCAA College Basketball Tournament Bracket Predictions - CBSSports.com News, Scores, Stats, Schedule and RPI Rankings

Has us playing Oregon in Milwaukee. Of course that was before they lost their PG, Dominic Artis, to a suspension, but they are pretty deep this season.

Mandatory ripping of Palm aside, that's actually a pretty good scenario for ISU as a lower seed. Hilton Northeast anyone? Louisville would not have clear cut home court advantage for that one.

That would be a decent geographic placement (per Google maps, about 20 minutes closer for Ames-area than it is UL). That's not even counting any ISU contingent from Twin Cities (also the same distance) .... alumni in Chicago area, hard to tell between those two.

The additional hurdle of winning 7-10 game stands in the way, of course (but there's "home court" there, too).

Edit/addendum: I'd be surprised to get such a favorable regional placement. Not impossible. But notice how Palm also has St. Louis as 8 seed playing the No. 1 overall seed in St. Louis. I don't think he bothered with the regional detail (which is, frankly, part of the process).

Bumping this thread up after a month of the season after looking at some of the current projections. We picked a really bad year to have to be good in terms of pods that are close to Ames. Really the only two that are driveable from Ames is Milwaukee and St. Louis. The St. Louis pod will be nearly impossible to get with Kentucky, Louisville and Kansas all probably going to have higher seeds than ISU. The Milwaukee might be a little easier as there aren't any slam dunk high seeds near there besides Michigan State.

I've see a couple of brackets where we're getting shipped off to Spokane as a 4 seed. That would suck.

Just thought I'd ramble a little while waiting for this damn Iowa game to get here. And yes I know it's only December, this was just something I noticed.

I wonder when they will release some new predictions. I want to see where they think we are now.

Right now we're considered a 5-6-7 I think but it's way way early. Knowing Palm, he will still have us in the first four out and say the Big 10 has 10 teams in his initial bracket.

Bracketology predictions in early December proves that a sense of depravity in relationship to our society and sports truly exists.

It kinda reminds me of all those yahoos that would post their "grand ideas" for a CFB playoff format on various forums a few years back. Every butthole with a computer had some awesome idea that they thought the world needed to read about.

True about the travel situation, but if ISU did reach top-4 seed range, possibilities would be limited most years, even with different sites, unless we got 1 or 2 seed and/or Omaha and Minneapolis happened to be first-weekend destinations ... in an average year, KC would go to Kansas if it has a typical higher seed, StL is even less likely (involving the teams you listed).

Milwaukee has possibilities, although there's a lot of Big Ten nearby.

Let's assume current pecking order (based on rankings as a baseline) held until postseason, Milwaukee would get Wisconsin or possibly Michigan State (Buffalo is a possibility for MSU, but Syracuse and Ohio State are more likely to snag that site — Villanova is in the mix, too).

Best guess, if Iowa State got no higher than 4, it's going west (Spokane) or south (San Antonio) for first weekend.

We're getting too specific with speculation — but since we're putting the cart before the horse, those are the regional considerations.

Omaha hosts again in 2015, so there's a chance for next year. Had KU and Mizzou as 1 and 2 seeds here back in 2012. I was at the Mizzou game with Norfolk St. Great sporting event to attend and see that upset occur.

Regarding subregional sites (with or without ISU’s involvement)-- this year’s tournament has an unusually westward-tilt, especially considering traditional distribution of power nationally.

First weekend: San Diego, Spokane and San Antonio are west of the Mississippi. St. Louis is straddling it. That’s 4 of the 8 sites.

Unless we see something like 8 of the 20 top seeds coming from Pac-12, southern Big 12, Mountain West and WCC, it's likely at least one 4-5 matchup (perhaps even a 3-6) may involve teams that are both moved far from home to Spokane or San Diego.

I still can't believe Des Moines still hasn't has the chance to host the second/third rounds. If Des Moines can host WBB sweet sixteen/elite eight and the wrestling national championships, it can surely host the second/third rounds of the MBB tournament. And before anybody says there aren't enough hotels in the area, this has already been debunked. They said hosting the NCAA tournament is a tough barrier to break with the NCAA.

Of course I'd rather ISU could play close to home to get a large crowd there, but selfishly, I've been waiting for a Spokane destination. I would represent proudly if they came west!
