Messingham needs to go!

...and for those of you who fixate on "not having the players", look on the defensive side of the ball. Wally lost all kinds of talent of defense from last year, and he is at least putting a competitive defense out on the field. Also, look at a team like Texas Tech. They have a new coach and are starting a true freshman walk-on QB. They are 3-0, 5th in the nation in pass yards and are averaging 40 points a game.

You just can't tell me that scheme and coaching can't overcome some talent issues.

This is true. There is some bad coaching on he offensive side of the ball.

1. Bowl games are as easy as pie to go to now. Even Walden and Criner would have made them.
2. Rhoads made 3 mediocre bowl games. Got embarassed in 2 and was slightly less incompetent than Minnesota.
3. Our teams in the 70s were 10000x better than this trash.

Bowl games were easy when Mac or Chiz were here too. In fact, easier because we didnt play round robin conference schedule.

Whether you like it or not, we have only won three bowls in our history. And Rhoads has one of them.

This isnt the 70s. Just an FYI...

Just look at the drive chart Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Iowa State Cyclones - Drivechart - September 14, 2013 - ESPN. The longest offensive drive in the first half was 17 yards. 4 punts within the first 4 drives of the game is not players not being fast, or strong enough, its offensive game plan. The first half was as bad as the second half of the bowl game last year. Messingham has never shown an ability to call a game that is good enough to beat a team.

Mistake #1 was immediately getting rid of McFarland (best Oc last 10 years) when he was still on our payroll anyway. Mistake #2 was Mr Mensa. Mistake #3 was mess, who was not even as good as Hermann , who was a failure.

I could not believe that we tried to run up the middle so much. Iowa was pretty solid there mess must not of looked at film. I also could not believe he did not us Wimberly. The guy has some speed find a way to use him. Mes is turd that we need to flush. Now I have to listen to hawk fans for a year because Mess sucks as oc and could not use two weeks to find a way to beat a crappy iowa team.

After that game, I just don't see how someone can defense him. I have a lot of respect for CW and he's been defending our OC a bunch. I hope that'll stop and at least in CF we're not forced to swallow more nonsense about Mess not being a....well....mess.

I want someone to ask who was calling plays in the fourth. Then I want to know why it took them so long to figure out the middle of the field was wide open.

I feel bad for Mess, he is in a situation he wasn't really prepared for and isn't capable of doing. PR just made a really bad hire and now has a big problem. I think you can see it in the players and coaches now too, everyone knows he is over his head. Last night I don't take much away, Mess never had a chance last night, everyone was banged up, can't run the zone read, he really was handicapped more than usual.

Now, that said about last night...Mess is a total disaster. It isn't because of last night, but because of the previous 13 games.

I'm really curious who was available to hire as an OC when Messingham was hired. It seems like a head scratcher. No one was really happy with Hermann and it was a chance to get rid of that system, but...no.

Tony Franklin who is now at Cal was hired the same year at LA Tech and they led the country in scoring

The real question - who is Mess going to blame the poor performance on this week? Probably not himself - he probably still thinks the major problem was the players' failure to execute.

After listening to CPR after the game he said they knew Iowa was very stout up front and yet our scripted plays to start the game started with banging our heads against that wall.

For those of you that think this is just 2 games of questionable play calling I think it is now 15. Good coaching takes the players you have and optimizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses. It would be interesting to bring in a proven guy like Mangino as a consultant and have him look at tape and have him tell us what plays he would call using only our playbook.

The whole game I wondered why SR wasn't making quicker decisions to run and then after the game find out he is hurt. Also, found out we are down to 3rd stringers at OG and Center. Sitting in the stands and not having a radio limits me on what's going on. While I don't blame this loss completely on Mess I do think based on his body of work CPR needs to do something soon - he addressed OL with a new coach now it is time to at least give someone else on the staff a shot at play calling and address the OC position in the off season.

For those of you who say "unless we have coached we can't be critical" that is simply ridiculous - this is where people come to vent.

I agree with people that find it ridiculous when others say if you haven't coached a college game, you can't complain because you don't know. I'm not a movie critic, but I've seen enough films to know that Spice World sucked. I don't have a Grammy, but I've heard enough music to know that Justin Bieber is terrible. I don't have an pristine acute sense of smell, but I can tell you that a turd stinks. And I've watched enough football to know that Messingham's play calling is a turd.

Hermann was a good hire at the time. We have the benefit of hindsight on how it worked out but his resume looked good. He must not be terrible or he wouldnt be at OSU. Again, it didnt work out here.

Mess, on the other hand, was a head-scratcher then. And it is evident it isnt working. Change is needed.

New rule, anyone that complains about the coaches should coach a game and see how they do.

I don't take any stock in the coaching abilities of coach critics usually but I bet there are A LOT of people on this board that could have led us to more than 68 yards of offense in 1st half against a bad iowa team. let that sink in. 68 yards. if many diaz gets fired at Texas after how much they gave up to BYU on the ground, then mess has to be fired over 68 yards against Iowa's D.

the pistol formation and plays played right into iowas philosophy. how hard is it to spread the field and throw 70% of the time like EVERY team that beats iowa (and how we did it the last two years.)

mess has to go.

Mangino is currently coaching at youngstown state. Not sure if he'd leave mid season to come coach here.
