Bad coaching and recruiting. I am sick of it. We should never lose to an FCS team. When will this program ever get to the point where we aren't trying to figure out which 6 games we have a chance to win to make it to a bowl game? I'm sorry but Rhoads hasn't been the program savior that he is made out to be on this message board. Its about time that us as fans start getting ****** at this program and start demanding excellence. Not this BS that is trotted on the field every week and we have our fingers crossed hoping we pull out a win.

CPR has never had more that 3 wins in the BigXII.

That 1 signature win each year has carried him a very long way.
While I must say I have truly loved having him as our coach, you're right. At what point do we try something different.
The sad part is a question which is hard to contemplate: can we do better than CPR?

I hope so - but I guess we just hold out for year 6 and hope that's better than year 5

I'm not saying we fire him at this point. I'm just saying he might not be the savior many of us thought we had.

Some facts about CPR as head coach:
3 wins in the BigXII is the best he's ever done
3rd to last place in the BigXII is the best he's ever done
1 signature win per year has kept us with a shred of 'hope'
His only bowl win was a team that he inherited and didn't recruit himself
6 wins in the regular season is his best (7 if you count the bowl win) - and that was year one.

Same thing happened with Danny Mac. History will repeat itself here again when the boosters get sick of CPR. And it will happen.

"So proud" I bought 8 season tix this year. Feeling Embarassed

I think a lot of people are feeling this way today. And that's not good at all.

The fans stepped up big time this year. But you can't expect them to keep doing so with these kinds of performances. A lot of people are already regretting they bought season tickets today. That is a big negative going forward. All the air was let out of the balloon last night.

Just remember that 10 year, 20 million dollar contract signed at the end of '11.

I'm willing to let a lot of that pass because he's building a program at a place that simply isn't an easy place to win. I know I'm sounding like an apologist - just let me finish.

My biggest cause for concern is Rhoads' refusal to replace Messingham at OC. Several years in now it's clear he cannot run an offense. One of McCarney's biggest downfalls was his loyalty to his assistants. Rhoads is beginning to exhibit the same behavior. A head coach at a quality program would never let this go on this long because those coaches realize that it ultimately reflects on them and keeping bad coaches around can cost them his job. Rhoads had better realize he needs to keep house, including cleaning it, before the fans start demanding JP clean it for him, starting with him.

Yeah, we're stuck with Rhoads for quite a while, so we might as well just shut up about firing him. It won't happen.

However, JP could very easily demand that Rhoads make changes with some of his assistants, and if he doesn't then he will be forced to can Rhoads too.

Messingham is way in over his head. He has no clue. How we can be one of the worst offenses in college football year in and year out is beyond me. Rhoads and Mess must be pretty close buddies.

I actually dont think this melt-down is bad at all. Im kind of surprised.

Agreed, a meltdown occurs when people are mad. Losing to UNI is just pathetic so people are just at a loss for words. This could be a loss that really hurts Rhoads "progress". For no reason ever should ISU lose to UNI.

I don't think Paul should be fired, but he does need to shake up his staff. He needs to find some better recruiters, and play calling/development on the offensive side of the ball.

But I am actually leaning towards the fact that mediocrity may be the ceiling for ISU in football. Our history has shown that it's almost impossible to win here on any sort of consistent basis.

ISU has to hold the record (I'm too lazy to look it up) for BCS league teams losing to 1AA/FCS teams.

Our facilities have gotten much better, but so has everyone else's so we probably haven't changed as much as we think we have relative to our competitors.

Ames is for many reasons, one of the toughest places to recruit in the major sports, but particularly football, where most players come from warm climates.

Hell, look at basketball. We have a great atmosphere (Hilton), some modest tradition, one of the hottest coaches in the country right now, who happens to be good looking, charming, bright, etc and he's struggling to land good players out of HS. For the most part, his success hinges on transfers, jucos and being creative with recruiting, which is exactly what Floyd and LE did.

Football doesn't have as much in the way of transfers, and there seems to be far fewer juco recruits because the truly great ones that were in juco because of grades are picked over by the big programs.
