Is Tulsa that bad...

Bowling Green has a pretty good defense, from the looks of it.

But Tulsa played a horrible game all around. They lost a lot from their defense last year, and it showed. They brought back almost everything from their offense, but couldn't do anything until the scrubs came in.

Tulsa shot themselves in the foot over and over again. Should have been a lot closer than it was.

or is Bowling Green really that good? Last night's game makes our trip down there a lot less scary.

BG had a pretty good defense last year, and I guess they returned like 9 starters. That said, they are a MAC team. I'd guess that Tulsa is better than we saw last night, but they definitely have some issues that they need to address. One other thing, Trey Watts, Tulsa's do everything running back was sidelined for most of two quarters during the game with cramps, and was pretty much a non factor. I don't expect that he'll play such a small role in future games.

The Tulsa defense took a huge step back with losses on the line and LB corp. Hopefully ISU did a better job of restocking the defense than they did. Tulsa also lost their 3 best OL, and that really shows. Tulsa was able to manhandle ISU in the bowl game because they could run right at the Clones. The Tulsa QB is not very good, be was incredibly bad last night. Hopefully he will be that bad when ISU comes to town.

I think they also lost a starting safety to Grades earlier this week. So that defense is down to two returning starters I believe they said right before the game started. Plus most teams play worse on the road than home, also first game of the year. I expect we will see a different Tulsa team than the one that played BG last night.

Tulsa last night looked like US in the Liberty Bowl.

Re-watched some of the game late last night & would have to say Tulsa was not that bad. Why?

The game was 6-0 at the half on the road in a season opener. They lost a lot of key players, but they have some good ones returning (RBs, MLB, QB, WR). They fumbled inside the 5 yard line which resulted in a big momentum shift.

They eventually fell behind and abandoned the run as they tried to throw more, which is not Green's strength. Had they not fallen behind & been able to run more with Douglas, Watts, & Green, the game could have been very different. Their RBs had 24 rushing attempts (for just 51 yards - whew, didn't realize it was that low!) and the QBs threw the ball 41 times (completing just 20). Conversely, Bowling Green ran 53 times for 233 yards (4.4 clip) and threw 28 times while completing only 12.

The OL of Tulsa was nowhere close in performing like their line last year. BG blew up a lot of the power running plays. Tulsa's DL is a shadow of itself, and their top DE was nicked early on in the game. If our OL produces better than last year, we should be able to run the ball. However, #55 MLB is a stud, and #32 was pretty good, too. BG did not challenge much with a vertical passing game, but the Tulsa DBs were not tested by many passes and were really charging the line of scrimmage a lot to try & stop BG's running game.

To me, the game was closer than the score indicated but yes, this year's Tulsa team is not what it was last year. However, the game will be in their stadium, their coaching is good, & team's make a lot of progress after the first game of the season. It will be a challenging game.

In the end, we have a game against UNI to focus on first. Tulsa is not for a while. The slate of Thursday night games has fed the appetite for college football & watching a team we will face later makes the game more worth watching. However, drawing large conclusions from it is difficult, especially considering we have not witnessed our Cyclones on the field. Hopefully the OL can impose their will on the UNI defense. Saturday cannot come fast enough!

Sorry but Tulsa lost 9 guys on defense and almost their whole offensive line, they are not the same team. On offense they are a one man show, if they cant run the ball, they look like they did last night. Cody Green transferred from NU for a reason, he still cant throw.

Tulsa oline looked stodgy and foot slow.

Absolutely Cody Green is a big part of the problem. kNU played a RB at QB for most of the game in 2010 rather than rely on Cody.

I hope we don't need our A game to best lowly tulsa. If I was the coach leading up to the week of of the game I might tell the team that, but as a fan, I think were to a point where we can get a win like we did @UConn a couple years ago
