Call me naïve, foolish, and cocky if you'd like, but Hoiberg has at least established himself and the Iowa State program. If these guys are going to give an unestablished (if that's a real word) coach the time of day, they should at least give Hoiberg some serious consideration. Call me supercilious if you want, but at least Hoiberg has done something with himself as the head coach (two round of 32 appearances in three seasons), versus Pitino, who had one season finishing four games above .500 at FIU where they play nothing but mediocre talent.
We've all decided that plans sucks, but you'd probably be a hero on Iowa's board if you suggest this.

If I was a top H.S. recruit, I wouldn't want to commit to a program like Minnesota until Pitino proves himself. There is too much risk compared to other situations. Why take that gamble if you don't have to. That is why I think Fred had such a great plan using transfers to increase the overall talent in the first few years of the rebuild. Now he has proven himself as a coach and he can tell these high school kids what he has done, not just what he thinks he can do.

Good thing Royce White, Georges Niang, Chris Allen, Anthony booker and the rest of the guys don't think like you. It was our coach with Zero experience a few years ago. Guys trusted he could get it done and so they commited to us.
and it's a bad Minnesota team playing a bad UNLV team. I think it's safe to say the football game or the fan support at the football game won't get them any commitments.
I saw James tweet and am now wondering if Travis is going to UCLA this weekend as was previously said? Maybe he will check out Iowa State this Saturday if the UCLA visit is off? Of course he could still be getting on a plane for UCLA for official later Friday into the weekend?

Yep, all these guys were top 100 4 star or more recruits at one point as well. While most of these came with a little baggage along with their stars which gave us a bit more of an "in", many had what some would deem much "better" opportunities than ISU at the time (Royce picked us over Kentucky). Ultimately, they decided to choose us based on their faith in ISU, Hoiberg and what could be accomplished here, probably similar to what Pitino is trying to accomplish at Minnesota.
The fact that little Pitino has Whitehead, Vaughn, Travis, Macura, Illikainen, White, Elijah Thomas and interested and in many cases visiting/ visited is proving he's got some recruiting potential. Landing them is of course another issue - but it's at least a good start.

Yeah, I hope that as well. I hope people also remember that we ended up dead last in the Big 12 our first year under Hoiberg as well. Granted, a big reason we were dead last was due to Hoiberg going so heavy in the transfer route (gotta sit out a year), thus pretty much sacrificing his first year's team for the benefit of the program longer term. All said and done, Hoiberg kind of threw his first year guys out to the wolves but they did pretty good overall considering what they were working with. I'm not saying I don't completely agree with what Hoiberg did, because I do, but it definitely ended up hurting guys like Garrett their final year. Good thing Garrett was a trooper and should be one of the most respected Cyclones of all time for what he persevered through.

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows, but at least with 4 freshman, they would have the ability to contribute, so the chance to make your team better, whereas transfers have to sit out a year no matter what, so essentially contribute nothing outside of the simple ability to practice against them. There is no denying though that going the transfer route did sacrifice that first season to some extent. How much is debatable and it all worked out for the long-term benefit regardless. I still somewhat feel sorry for our Seniors that year, which is why I respect them so much.

You have a right to that opinion, of course. I feel like having quality transfers as practice bodies made Vanderbeken, Garrett, Christopherson, and Anderson better prepared for big 13 games. We were close in about 5 of the games we lost. I doubt that adding more frosh (which would be a recruiting scramble, and not likely to yield a lot of quality) wouldn't have made us any better.

You feel sorry for the guys that had their best record as Cyclones that year, and all thanks to Fred? I don't. They still had their best records their entire careers that year. If anything that's Mac's fault for not making them more. Fred got the most he could out of them, and couldn't have done much more with some low rent freshmen.
Anyway, back to recruiting. I didn't have high hopes for Colston, but now that just puts that much more presure on getting Jaylen.
Thanks for the update. Well, we can scratch Bonzie off the list. Hopefully we can get a quality big out of high school soon...
I could easily argue the opposite that we were one or two freshman away in terms of helping out our lack of depth that year from winning quite a few more games. Don't you remember how many games we let slip away that year due to just barely running out of gas right at the end of the game? I'm not saying we would have been top half of the league, but one could easily argue we wouldn't have been last had we had a little more depth that year.
