Official 2014 Recruiting thread

they moved official visits for basketball up to include junior years in bball just recently, why not football? There is still a set limit on how many you can take. the early signing period can't happen fast enough either. maybe all this can happen when we leave the NCAA

That is the problem with how things are set up now. Kids CAN'T take official visits until the fall. There was no way for our staff to even get him up here to see things unless he paid his own way.

The official visit window NEEDS to be moved up to June or July for us to host guys on official visits earlier. Especially considering that kids are committing earlier and earlier each year.

Ask yourself this... why have we been more successful with the more local highly rated recruits (Illinois and Wisconsin kids specifically)? Because they have been able to come to ISU for camps or have taken unofficial visits on their own dime.

We'd be able to woo a lot more highly rated guys out of the south were we allowed to host them on official visits over the summer.

The problem is... schools like Iowa and Iowa State have been pushing on this for a while now.

The main blockers of this are the "power schools from the south and west coast". Why would they vote to move official visits up when they can get verbals early? Especially when pretty much everybody they recruit is within driving distance?

Who's going to "flip" from a school like Bama or LSU? The fact of the matter is that they want the ability to poach guys at the last minute if they have to, fully knowing it won't happen in the reverse very often. Thus, no early signing period.

Also coincides with the SEC blowing up over last 7 years. Kids stay home the northern schools lose. Cant see the southern schools wanting to change the status quo.

And the northern schools gave them the return favor in Basketball where we have recruiting dominance without getting football in return.

IMO the staff is recruiting the hell out of the Oline and then will move them to the defensive side.

Some new recent offers: S Marquese Dudley-Gordon - Yahoo! Sports has a bunch of offers. S D.J. Copeland - Yahoo! Sports has some decent offers. DT Keiwan Jones - Yahoo! Sports is a bit small for a DT, but has some potential. LB Aaron Mends - Yahoo! Sports has offers from us and Iowa. JUCO LB Edward Muldrow - Yahoo! Sports is 6'4" 215 and very athletic from what I have gathered. Has some decent offers and could see immediate playing time at ISU. JUCO LB Dejon Brown - Yahoo! Sports could be another guy who could step in and see immediate PT. LB Terrell Lewis - Yahoo! Sports not sure when we offered him, but this is the first time I have seen his name. OG Freddie Booth-Lloyd - Yahoo! Sports is another new guy on the radar.

I thought if that actually happened, it would likely be the reverse. I seem to remember more defensive linemen in ISU history switching to the o-line rather than the other way around.

Usually easier to put on lbs than the reverse.

You. Are. Nuts.

No way on God's green earth.

Just doesn't happen.

Offensive linemen rarely have the athleticism for defense. Matter of fact, we already have young guys like Pierre Aka, Devlyn Cousin, Robbie Garcia and Vernell Trent, all of whom are excellent athletes. The defensive linemen we're currently recruiting fit the same mold. So, why in the world would the coaches do something blatantly stupid like "recruit the hell out of offensive linemen to convert them to defense"???

That's just plain ignorant.

Also ignores the fact that, five years into the program, CPR still doesn't have the OL up to the 18 scholarship slot he planned on--due to Shaban Dika's retirement.

Sorry if I'm a little too blunt, but I calll 'em like I see 'em.

Wow I dont even know where to start. I will say this, some of the most athletic individuals come from the offensive line. Offensive lineman have to be quick on their feet to contain the rush but also to make and sustain blocks down the field. Defensive lineman look athletic for the simple reason they are the ones in pursuit, the pursuit makes them look faster. There have been a few offensive lineman make the switch under Rhoads. Offensive line does get the short end of the stick but to say they are less athlectic is misinformed.

You dont think guys like Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel would make outstanding interior line guys. Watch the NFL combine once and tell me how "unathletic" offensive lineman are.

Who has made the switch from OL to DL under Rhoads? Omoile attempted it and lasted 1 day. He is the only one I can recall at this point.

Yes, O-lineman can be, and are athletic, but you are talking about 2 completely different body types. Eric Fisher is 6'7". Go look at who was drafted at DT this year. There's not one player over 6'4", and most of them were more like 6'1" or 6'2". If you get too tall of a player at DT, you start to lose the push because they can't play low enough to get leverage on the O line.

I don't think Fisher would make a good defensive linemen. There, I said it.

I wish you hadn't quoted Aclone; you're ruining the whole purpose of my Ignore List. It would do you (and everyone) well to add him on there.
