Saw this posted on a Vikings message board...Dave Thomas is a draft expert...don't really care about his opinion but I hope he's right about the Vikes wanting Klein...

Comment From Ancient Pistol
Hi Dave. Should Alec Ogletree's ability to play middle linebacker in a Tampa Two outweigh his potential character issues?

Dave Thomas:
Ogletree has had a littany of issues-headaches are not worth it
Dave Thomas:
No, both he & Teo are not worth first round consideration. Only Minter

Dave Thomas:
If they went that route, I have to pop on Khaseem Greene in round 2, but I think the Vikes are enamored with AJ Klein in the mid rounds

It feels very wrong to say this on may levels, but "I really want to see that man in purple."

actually Rick Spielman is a pretty darn awesome talent scout. Their last few drafts have been very good.

Yup, and with all the picks the Vikes have at their disposal this year (especially early on), I haven't been this excited for the NFL draft in a long time.

:biglaugh:

What are the chances of that?

Judging by last year's draft, which was Spielman's first as GM, they look pretty good. I'll take a group of two Pro Bowlers, a future Pro Bowler in Smith, and some solid role players every year.

I get pretty tired of people joking or complaining about the Vikings and their drafting abilities. We've done really well. And I'd love to have Klein in Minnesota.

In my defense - the vikings have earned that reputation with their brilliant trades to get herschel walker.

I didn't follow the NFL that closely last year and was unaware that they did well, and certainly wish them the best this year - especially if that lands them a Clone.

Yeah I wasn't referring to you specifically. There's just a lot of that on here. Last year was a great draft and I'm hoping for another one. Getting Klein would certainly help!

they haven't really had a "bad" draft since 2005. Since then, they've had some average ones and some really good ones, but no real stinkers.

The Vikings haven't missed a whole lot in the early rounds the past few years. But you can't convince me they've done "really well" in the rest. Look back at who they've taken in the 3rd-7th rounds and its a who's-who of guys who had absolutely no impact or are no longer in the league

And I'm not gonna try to convince you. There's no point in that. That Blair Walsh guy is pretty decent. He did "really well."

yeah, but that's almost everybody in the league. Late round picks are very hit or miss for everyone.

When I consider a draft, you look at players who are still with the team. Look at 2010. There are no stars in that draft, but you've got a lot of guys who are still logging minutes in Cook, Gerhart, and Griffen. All told that was a pretty average draft, but certainly not a bad one.

QB has been a tender spot.
I whipped this up real quick.

I actually believe in Ponder. He played much better at the end of the season than the whole year so he's getting better. I realize he might not have been 12th overall pick material.

How long does a franchise maintain a reputation based on a trade in 1989?
Was anyone in the Viking front office even working there at the time?

I don't care either way about the team. It seems like people would need a lot more than a deal from 1989 to base a reputation on.
