Selling Big ticket items on Ebay/CL???

Im trying to sell my motorcycle to free up some cash for a new truck.

I did a search on here for others experiences but most were older threads. . .

I listed on CL and immediately realized that CL is full of scammers. I have immediately become "over sensitive" but realize that as long as I am careful I should be ok.

Only two responses so far have been scams that I found with ease searching for "CL scams" on google. Took my phone number off the add and only accepting email responses.

So assuming that I weed out the scammers I still have the issue of exchanging my motorcycle for some form of payment.

This is a $10-$12,000 dollar bike so Im not sure I can demand "cash" sale (I can but might limit buyers to small pool).

Any fellow CFers have suggestions on a safe method of payment?

We sold a Cherokee on eBay. I suggest accepting a cash or a cashier's check (keep in mid those can also be fabricated) and meet at your bank to have them check it/deposit it immediately.

absolutely require a cashiers check and meet at your bank. whatever you do, deposit the funds before letting the bike go to insure they are valid.

A couple things:
-make sure you are insured if a local sale and they want a test ride. I had someone dump a scooter I was selling once...thankfully they bought it.

-For that much money, I agree with meeting at a bank for cashiers check.

-you could ask for cash as well, but if you do that ensure you do the transaction in a safe place

-make a bill of sale

-I always have people on Craigslist put something in the subject line to know they are not a spammer

You can accept personal check with the stipulation that you hold the item for 10 days to verify the check clears. Personally I only take cash or cashier's check for any item I sell on Craigslist. Paypal would be considered a secure way to transfer funds too. I've sold a used car before on CL and my parents and I use CL to sell some of our cattle on too and yeah you'll get a few weird emails from it but as long as you know how to spot a scam out you'll be fine. Bottom line is you as the seller can dictate the terms of the sale, if someone doesn't want to follow your terms then they probably are not someone you want to be doing business with.

Have them wire the funds.

It might cost you a few bucks, but you'll know that the money is good at the time that you transfer the property.

I prefer to avoid the electronic transactions.

I usually explicitly require that interested parties email me with their phone number and don't reply to those who do not provide it. That seems to filter out the scammers/spammers who prefer to remain anonymous behind their email addresses.

I would take cash. If they have the money to buy it they should be able to get cash. Second option would be a U.S. Postal Money Order, not a cashiers check. Both could be faked, but if it is a US Postal Money Order then they are screwing with the Feds, and I would think that would be a lot less likely. Who really wants to go to a Federal Prison?

Yeah just a cashier check isn't a good idea. Meeting at the bank is a good way around that, though
