So had some cement siding pull off in the wind today and from what I'm googling there should be a nail every 16" or so, but mine was installed with half that. Called the builder who admits it was a mistake and is going to send someone out to fix it. My worry is they cut corners on the siding for the entire house. Is 16" correct and if so would a lawsuit to get them to re-side it make sense?

Find out what code is. Take pictures. Even if it's not the entire house, they definitely didn't do this only on that one spot, unless it was the last board installed, at the very top of the house. It would definitely be worth looking into, because you will hav more problems as time goes on

Builders suck, and almost all cut corners. Last home we built was with Shane Madison, Summit homes, the worst person i have ever dealt with in my entire life. He lied so many times, and went bankrupt right after he "finished our house" Needless to say he cut a ton of corners... Entire bathroom flooded, and I think he painted cabinets he had left over to look like the expensive ones we picked out... Just two of the one hundred items. Regardless placing a lawsuit, I was told, will get us no where.

I work with cement siding all the time and the manufacturer tells us that a roofing nail at least inch and a quarter long needs to be nailed in every stud, which would be 16" apart...or 8d nails can be used if its face nailed on the bottom part of each row

Don't judge all builders and stereotype us all from your bad experience. There are a lot of us honest builders out there...just can't always go with the lowest bid.

I've installed more cement board siding than I'd like to admit, of all types (Hardie, Certainteed, Maxtile). It should be nailed every 16 inches on studs. Types of nails used have varied throughout the years, whether they are ring shanks, smooth, roof nails, siding nails or whatever based on manufacturers suggestions. We use 2 inch smooth shank siding nails right now, longer if there is foam over the OSB. If your siding isn't installed this way, it voids any sort of warranty. My buddy's parents had their entire house resided with cement board for free last year after I told them it was installed incorrectly and their materials were defective, so it is possible. Best of luck to you.
