Hit and Run Victim

I'm surprised more cities don't require lights when walking and jogging. Bicycles are required to have both front and back at night so why not extend that to anyone using the road such as joggers? This is an inexpensive piece of equipment to attach to a belt.
Honestly, wearing intelligent clothing makes me notice things a lot more than just a reflector like bikes have. I used to have a blinking light I could clip to my clothes but have found wearing clothes with reflective material in them makes me a lot easier to see.

I kind of disagree, call me an ***, ban me, whatever, but this brings to light, imo, a growing problem, especially in my community. People jogging of all hours of the night and early morning, in pitch black, in the middle of the street. OK, let's find the driver first, sure and charge them for a hit and run, but there is more to this than just a bad, dumb driver.

I feel terrible for this person, no one should ever get hit by a car, especially in a hit and run incident, but this is a good time for people to realize that it's less likely you will get hit jogging if you are doing it on the sidewalk as opposed to the street. I've never understood why jogging in the street is considered accepted behavior, if you are in an area with sidewalks.

And if you arent.. Drive 3 blocks to an area that does have them. No excuse to ever have to jog on the street, unless you do not have a car.

I frequently see people jogging along Delaware at night in the Briarwood area.

THAT said.... if you God forbid hit someone, I can not see how you would not want to help them.

If you are following the law, your bike needs more than a reflector at night. Front and rear lights are required in all the areas I've lived when biking at night. Reflective clothing is still dependent on the drivers lights hitting them to be seen. Lights help drivers recognize the runner from a greater distance and make needed precautions.

I guess I would just never trust bad drivers. Way too many people driving around texting, messing with crap in their car for me to trust that they will see me jogging on a busy road at night no matter how many reflectors I was wearing.

I would rather jog somewhere safer.

That doesn't seem too crazy too me

My only point in the original post was that you should never HAVE to run on the street. The option always remains to find a sidewalk.. obviously anyone can risk doing whatever they want to do.

There was not much FAIL in saying that no body should ever HAVE to run on the street.

I drive a silver Saturn that has been mistaken for a Toyota before (for some unknown reason) and has front end damage from a deer collision that I've yet to fix. I also live near 56th street. Can't wait to have the neighbors report me to the cops.

Sorry to hear about this. Terrible and wish her a very speedy recovery. Humans can have some of the best qualities and some of the absolute worst.

I run on the streets of my town all the time. In the dark. The reason, you ask? If I used the sidewalks in this town, I'd snap an ankle.

That's not "accepting responsibility". That's "I was drunk so didn't stop but now I know I'm going to get caught sooner or later so I'm going to turn myself in to make me seem like a better person".

I'm not blaming the victim, but people need to stop running in the street especially at night. There is a reason the streets are lined with sidewalks.

I don't know about your neighborhood, but the sidewalks in my neighborhood are too uneven to run on in the dark. Streetlights don't provide enough light to see the trip hazrds. That is the reason I run in the street.

So you are thinking why must you run in the dark anyway - right? That is the only time available to me to run.

You should be atleast wearing reflective gear.
