Remember those years in the 70s and 80s when kstate was a door mat of the BIG 8? Remember ISU getting blown away in at least 3 to 4 games a year? What a difference a coach makes. Im real optimitic about the future with Rhoads in this program .
Bill Snyders record at K state

1989 1-10-0
1990 5-6-0
1991 7-4-0
1992 5-6-0
1993 9-2-1 - Copper Bowl (W)
1994 9-3-0 - Aloha Bowl (L)
1995 10-2-0 - Holiday Bowl (W)
1996 9-3-0 - Cotton Bowl (L)
1997 11-1-0 - Fiesta Bowl (W)
1998 11-2-0 - Alamo Bowl (L)
1999 11-1-0 - Holiday Bowl (W)
2000 11-3-0 - Cotton Bowl (W)
2001 6-6-0 - Insight Bowl (L)
2002 11-2-0 - Holiday Bowl (W)
2003 11-4-0 - Fiesta Bowl (L)
2004 4-7-0
2005 5-6-0
2009 6-6
2010 7-6 - Pinstripe Bowl (L)

Did they really play 15 games in 2003? No wonder they only won 4 games the next year, they must have been spent.

Yes they did play 15. That was the year they blew OU away in the Big 12 championship. I guess what really intrigued me was Bills first 4 years. Rhoads has done more in his first 4 than he had done. Sure K state was a door mat in 1988, but so has ISU in the past. We have never played a stoops team so tuff in the past, like we have the last 2 years. I like where were goin.

I still can't believe we finished with a better record in 2001, yet still lost to them 42-3 at home. Dan mac egg.

Never know which way it's going to go, but Rhoads feels right.

Here's how bad K-State was. When we were at our absolute worst in the 80's and early 90's they were STILL an automatic win.

Snyder has an eye for talent unlike anyone else in the country. The guy is able to identify lightly recruited players who have the ability to play at a championship level like nobody else. Here, check out K-State's recruiting ranking the past 4 years:

Rivals:

KSU

2011 - # 58
2010 - #63
2009 - #92
2008 - #27

it's one of the elements of coaching that separates him from the rest, particularly from the mack brown's of the world, who get nothing but the cream of the crop.

snyder recruits differently. he believes in values more than stars. and when he brings them in, they meld into his system like no other. arthur brown is a good example when compared to his bro, who left because he couldn't deal with it. but still, he now plays in 'the league.' would other coaches run off a bryce brown?

i believe rhodes is very similar to bill. he's just not 'seasoned' like our old guy. but he'll get there. and he will be a stellar coach for years to come.

still, like k-state, my bet is iowa state never becomes elite, in the eyes of the talking heads, but will win championships every 8-10 years, and perhaps get a shot or two at the national championship.

and i just can't see rhodes ever leaving ames. if he does, i'll be surprised and disappointed. emaw.

Two thoughts here:

1.) How old was Snyder when he got to K-State? I like the idea of Rhoads being "unseasoned," I also think he's young.

2.) Thanks for being such a civil poster. Seen a few of your posts and it's actually a fun discussion.

Didn't Snyder show interest in the ISU job when we fires Criner and before we hired Walden?

Yeah Bill Snyder wanted the job very bad and Hayden Fry did everything he could do to get ISU to hire Snyder.

Probably the biggest mistake ever in ISU football wash hiring Jim Walden instead of Bill Snyder.

a lot of myths about stuff like this. ku claims the same thing. snyder wanted the kansas job but they turned him down. surprising how popular he's gotten since '89. only thing i know for sure is that he did turn down ucla in the late '90's.

He has certainly done an outstanding job at probably the worst football program in the country when he took over. It should give hope to any program like ISU.

The other interesting trend that this post points out is how hard it is to maintain success.

(a) Coach builds program, (b) Program starts to exceed, (c) Key assistants leave to take their opportunities, (d) Coach cannot replace key losses, (e) Coach starts to burn out, (f) Program falls back.

Seen it with Hayden Fry, seen it with Bill Snyder I, seen it with Danny Mac (although the highs weren't so high), probably seeing it with Mack Brown right now. Bob Stoops may be next, although he got his brother back on staff.

Amazing BS got it going again.

We'll never see another coach like Snyder, he's able to hav sucess because the program has his fingerprints all over it. It reflects his personality, a friend I grew up with has an uncle that coached under Snyder at Kstate (he now coaches at Tulsa) and has coached under several other coaches since, he says no one works harder than Bill, that hard work shows. Head coaches today have to wear so many hats that too many things are delegated, assistant coaches come and go and programs aren't able to take on the personalities of their head coaches. Snyder is a throwback, there just aren't many guys that like around anymore.
