Steele Jantz

Once again, I'm not blaming Steele people. he doesn't run this offense by himself as some on here would like to think. But we give props to the RB when we run it well and **** on the OL when we don't.

BTW, on my bolded part, I'm not sure how the OL was worn down. They were not on the field enough to be tired.

3rd Q Drives:
3 plays punt
3 plays punt
5 plays fumble

4th Q Drives:
3 plays punt
5 plays punt
9 plays INT
3 plays punt

I'll grant you that, but I didn't want to say "outmuscled" in all honesty. They were manhandling us pretty good in the run game, IMO and I didn't like that. When we have 1st and goal at the 3-yard line, I expect a touchdown and nothing less.

I know where you're going with this and it's not called for. I have been really nice on this board. But, I will play along because I can. You're right.....Nothing changed with the OL. However, the OU and KSU games were the two worst conditions for a football game last year...running or throwing. We sucked against OU but we were about even with KSU. Actually we rushed for more yards than they did. As for Rutgers, we rushed for 97 yards in that game, 57 of them came within the first 16 minutes of the game. That means the last 44 minutes, we rushed for 40 yards.

I don't know how you took that as a shot at you. I really don't. I'm simply showing how the caliber of a teams defense makes up a big difference in rushing stats. Those 6 games show a big difference and you can look at their defenses and see why.

I do have a question for whoever explained the "Scrape-Exchange." (Too lazy to go back and find the quote).

1.) Thank you for the football insight. LOVE posts like that.
2.) If this is the case, is the answer to play-fake the read, then release the tight end into the hole behind the safety/LB who is spying the QB? Just curious since I love football, and love learning the X's and O's whenever possible, not having ever played myself.

On #2, you can block the end, and then run up the middle if you see the LB scraping. I don't have a replay to watch until it pops up on Cyclonestv, but I'm guessing it was a combination of some bad reads, poor blocking, and Iowa's LBs being pretty darn quick.

The scrape-exchange won't beat the zone read by itself, but I'd guess they mixed it in.

This all seems quite silly. It should seem obvious to most of us that there isn't much separating the two QBs. If there was, it wouldn't have taken until the Tuesday before the first game to name a starter. But, SJ is the starter now. The coaches (and from all I've heard, the players too) have confidence in SJ. And, SJ has had a bit of a resurgence of self-confidence as well. If you're going to pull the #1 for the #2 there had better be a very clear reason why.

After going 2-0 with one of those wins being on the road against an average to good Big10 team, you're sort of insane if you're even having a conversation about the #2 QB.

My apologies. I just know that every time I get on here people are looking to take shots because of JB when I just want to win football games....however and with whomever. We also lost the games we didn't run the ball very well in. That's what I'm pointing out. Even with Steele's 200 yards passing in the bowl game. We have to run the football better!

I agree and also why I haven't even gone down the Barnett path. Strictly critiquing steeles play.

A scrape will most certainly beat a zone read by itself. It does allow more things to open up and we have to start taking advantage of those openings.

That's not the case here from my standpoint.

You won't here me argue with that.

In a game like Saturday where Iowa was daring us to beat us with the pass, I wish we would have spread it out more and did just that. I didn't understand the 2 tight end looks we had were even when we did pass, we weren't spreading them out. James Morris can keep up with most our Tight Ends. He isn't going to stay with Horne, West, Lenz, Gary, or Young across the middle.

I just thinks its okay for a fan to be objective and say he didn't play a good game.

Exactly. The Defense won that game, hands down. The Offense only put up 9 points, all in the 1st Q. Once Iowa adjusted, we could barely function. The defense gave the offense tremendous field position and a chance to put the game away in the 3rd Q, and we struggled. It is fine to discuss this since that kind of offensive production won't win us a single game in conference play, sans maybe KU. And folks, Iowa has a good D (and at home), but nothing outstanding.

Everyone knows that JB is probably a little more comfortable with the rushing attack than SJ. So a slight dropoff with SJ is perfectly fine.

But what we are supposed to get with SJ is a better downfield passing game. I saw our WR getting separation downfield, and I saw our OL protecting the hell out of our QB and giving him time, yet we consistently missed, and frequently by a wide margin. Other than Lenz against UT and the pass int call early, we did not get much, yet it was there.

And what we were supposed to get with SJ is better decision making this year. Both his picks were bad decisions, thrown right to Iowa. The pick at the end is nearly inexcusable. A stupid mistake.

We are fortunate to have won (thank you Jake Knott!!), and to achieve what the team wants in conference play, our QB still has to step up, regardless of who is on the field. Anyone that cannot see that is simply hiding their head in the sand.

Before the season, we all thought the key was QB play this year. And it still is.

We were inside the 11 three more times. That's not a good example of barely functioning.

Well, the information was just a few posts up.

3rd Q Drives:
3 plays punt
3 plays punt
5 plays fumble

4th Q Drives:
3 plays punt
5 plays punt
9 plays INT
3 plays punt

Out of seven second half possessions, if you want to call four 3 and outs, and two turnovers good offensive production, we will just have to disagree. And we only got inside the 11 twice in the second half, not three times.

This is where I am at. I wasn't ready to crown Jantz the king of QBs after the Tulsa game and I'm sure not going to hang the guy for a less than stellar outing against the Hawkeyes in Kinnick. I just don't agree that he had a good game as others here have said. I think whatever he did really well was lost on the two INTs. They were terrible and balls he should know by now not to throw.

Rhoads said today that in his press conference that, and I quote,
"Steele Jantz played a pretty good football game and Steele Jantz was on fire to start that football game. No different than AJ Klein or Jake Knott trying to do to much or maybe trying to get a little cute. He tried to get a little cute on a read and read a guy off that he had no business reading in the first place and made a mistake with it. He understands that and now it comes down to doing the things you are coached to do, play in and play out"

Who said second half? The guy said after the 1st quarter. In the second quarter ISU had four more drives:

9 plays FG
5 plays punt
7 plays int
4 plays missed FG as time expired

And they did get inside the 11 three more times because the LOS for the FG was the 4 yard line.

Yes, they weren't as effective after the first quarter in moving the ball. They had 111 yards rushing and passing after one. In the other three quarters they added on 231 total passing and rushing. That isn't nearly as effective but far from totally being shut down.
