Steele Jantz

Barnett is not that much better of an option. My problem is that everyone on here defending SJ keep saying that he is still learning and that he will get better. When? He is a senior and we are counting on him THIS year. There is no time for him to take his lumps and learn as he goes. If we are willing to accept a QB that is still learning then why not go with one of the young guys? Steele is gone after this year period! No time for learning on the job

My guess is that this assessment will be made after 2-3 conference games.

If SJ is cruising along, he will continue to be the starter.

However, if his completion % has fallen back down into the mid/lower 50% range, and if he is consistently making bad turnovers, he'll be replaced, because as you suggest, there is no reason to stick with a senior that isn't getting it done, when there are younger QBs who can achieve the same results.

However, it is way too early to make this judgment.

No, I won't get over it or bury my head in the sand.

He may three crucial turnovers in the red zone. That makes for a bad performance.

Had he done other good things to offset its be a different opinion. We put up 9 pts against a horrible eiu team.

Just be honest, he played a bad game. There's nothing wrong with making that statement. It's not hating or calling for the backup. Just clearly stating reality and that he needs to improve if we want to win in the big 12.

We ran for 160 the week before. What changed in the OL?

We were playing at home against a team in Conference USA that has never had a good defense versus playing on the road against a Big 10 school that has a history of stopping the run.

We ran for 160 the week before. What changed in the OL?

Last year we rushed for an average of 270 per game against Texas Tech, Kansas, and Okie State
Next 3 games we rushed for 142 against Oklahoma, K State, and Rutgers

Nothing changed in the OL.

I just thinks its okay for a fan to be objective and say he didn't play a good game.

Difference between being objective and saying it wasn't his best game (true) and saying he was awful and almost cost us the game (false).

Objectively he is getting better. Stats show it and just by watching his progressions you can see it. Western Illinois comes at a perfect time for them to work on some things. Watch the tape and bye, coach him up, and be ready for Big 12 season

For those saying we can run the zone-read near the goal line, look at these two plays. On the Tulsa (FSN) highlights on cyclones.com, you can see the difference in making the right and wrong read and how it affects the play. At the 35 second mark we run zone-read, the DE crashes down, Steele pulls it (makes the right read) and walks into the endzone. Go to the 2:26 mark, same play other side, the play develops the same but he gives to Shontrelle (makes the wrong read) instead of pulling it. Luckily Shontrelle made one hell of a play or its a 3 yard loss. Go to 1:48 on James White's TD, the DE slow plays it (shuffles instead of crashing) and Steele gives (makes the right read). Go to the 3:03 mark, same play as the one Steele scored on earlier, DE crashes he gives (makes the wrong read) but once again Shontrelle has the cutback ability to make the play work. On all of those, the OL blocking was great! We have to get consistent on the "reads" to make it execute properly.

I believe he was only credited with one turnover in the red zone. The Shontrelle fumbled first and White fumbled second.

I agree with you (that's why I didn't put much stock in that game eventhough we ran for 160 yards) and it's exactly my point. We have to figure out how to run the football better because "everyone' in the Big 12 have run stoppers.

Did you watch the game on Saturday? Honest question. B/c if you did, you would know there was little to no running room anywhere. It didn't matter if we kept it or gave it, Iowa was there.

Honestly, I've gained nothing but confidence in Steele this year over the last two games. He's much better than I expected based on his play last year.

Yes, we see this multiple times per game. It's almost a coin flip whether he makes the correct read. Things are happening very quickly on these plays granted, but he doesn't read it well, IMO. Results in tackles for loss, bad exchanges and missed opportunities. He's done this thousands of times at this point, so I don't think it's a stretch to say we're seeing what we have here. It's maddening but we need to just coach him up and hope he improves.

In his defense, in the second half the OL was getting outplayed, a bit worn down and became ineffective in the run game and that's not on Steele. Doesn't relieve him of making good reads but the OL needs to do better when its crunch time and we need a couple of hard fought yards.

Completely agree. The first quarter of the Iowa game was the best football I've seen him play. If he continues to improve we're going to be fine.

I know where you're going with this and it's not called for. I have been really nice on this board. But, I will play along because I can. You're right.....Nothing changed with the OL. However, the OU and KSU games were the two worst conditions for a football game last year...running or throwing. We sucked against OU but we were about even with KSU. Actually we rushed for more yards than they did. As for Rutgers, we rushed for 97 yards in that game, 57 of them came within the first 16 minutes of the game. That means the last 44 minutes, we rushed for 40 yards.

I saw Hassel Tweet that Iowa State would have "won easily" with Barnett playing QB. I have no doubt in my mind that if Barnett starts we lose by two TD's...

I did watch it. I saw running lanes. But as a coach, I'm looking for stuff the naked eye doesn't look for. I'm not saying this weeks running game woes were on Steele. I was just pointing out ways that the zone read may or may not work if not executed properly. I'm saying as a whole, we have to execute the run game better.

Anyone there that can comment on whether the long throws to open receivers were largely affected by wind? The play call on the last interception is the only thing I have an issue with. Throwing over the middle is hard even for the best QBs at any level. Ask Vandenberg. He said he saw Knott and tried to fit it in there. He didn't see Knott. Woody in the backfield at the 5 yard line changes what Iowa does defensively and we may have seen some creases to throw to. Jantz will be fine.

Once again, I'm not blaming Steele people. he doesn't run this offense by himself as some on here would like to think. But we give props to the RB when we run it well and **** on the OL when we don't.

BTW, on my bolded part, I'm not sure how the OL was worn down. They were not on the field enough to be tired.
