Steele Jantz

It wasn't just the last int. (which was a horrible mistake). If you know football, then you know that Steele is 1.5 years into running our offense and still isn't effectively running the zone read. I saw him make the wrong read several times today, which resulted in stuffed runs rather than effective gains. People want to rip on Mess, but any playcalling is going to look bad if the execution isn't there. I'm not sure how we take advantage of our awesome talant at RB if the QB can't effectively run our main running offense. This is a huge problem that cannot be ignored. And you are also overlooking several deep balls that were wide open, but missed. We should all enjoy the win, but definitely need to get this stuff turned around before the B12.

hard to execute a play when the D knows what play you are gonna run

After thinking about it and watching it again. Steele was not sa bad as I thought, and really was very good in the first half. Lot of stuff that went wrong wasn't his fault. Now he certainly made some bonehead plays that have to be cleaned up. But after watching it again and being very discouraged after the game in his play, I actually now feel pretty good about him.

If CPR thinks we have a better chance to win with a different QB, then he will play that QB. IMO, nothing else needs to be said on the matter.

Im not at all disappointed with our QB... I do believe Jantz will have a huge bounce back game against western illinois and that will give him a full head of steam heading into conference play... he made some mistakes, yes, but he made some plays too... in an awful tough place to play, and to iowas credit they made some great halftime adjustments... he will go back and work on his game and be ready to go... he will only get stronger as the year progresses... I truly believe that, and believe in him...

Thank you. If Steele's confidence hangs around, we've seen flashes of how good he can be.

As for complaining about him going for the "home run." Horne had his man beaten 3 different times in the game, and Steele just missed him.

This SHOULD have been a 2+ TD game. Ernst Bruns TD drop really hurt, and Steele was never the same after that.

Steele is now 5-4 as a starter. He played very efficient vs. Tulsa. He played good in the 1st half today.

In the 2nd half, we stuck to the same play calling tendencies that Iowa had adjusted for from what I saw. They had a the zone read snuffed out each time it seemed like. Varying up our run plays should help IMO. Some teachable moments for Jantz and Mess both.

Guess what guys.....5-4 is a better overall win percentage than ISU has had for their entire football history, which from my perspective that makes him one of our better QB's to start over the years. Lay off the kid. He is doing just fine.

I think in the first two games ISU fan's have seen a completely different Steele Jantz. IMO he is so much more patient in the pocket and has made much better decisions than last year. I understand today was a bit frustrating from him, but I just had such a better feeling with him back there than last year. I think he's back there to stay.
No, ISU fans have seen THEE Steele Jantz....A symbol inconsistency that has plagued Cyclone football....It always seems like there is a proverbial gun pointed at the foot of Iowa State, seeming to invent new ways to shoot themselves...I can't think of a consistent Iowa State quarterback in my lifetime...

Todd Doxson was consistently horrible.

Defenses have figured out how to counter the zone read. It's called a "scrape-exchange" and defenses have been doing it around the NCAA for a few years now. An earlier poster already told how it works - the DE is assigned to the RB and goes for him on every play. A LB/S is assigned to the QB and goes for him every play. It eliminates the option part of the play. There has to be another run we can go to when that's not working. We need to identify when teams are/aren't using the scrape-exchange against us. In my opinion, Mess needs to move to the booth. I was a bit anxious when I heard in the preseason that Mess would be on the sidelines. You just can't see the play as well on the ground. That, or whoever is in the booth (somebody for the offense is in the booth, right???) needs to do better communicating with coaches on the sidelines.

I think moving Messingham to the booth is an interesting topic of discussion. He seems to be a really good teacher, which would make it a positive for him to be on the field. Sturdy is in the booth, and I think Bleil is as well, and both have coordinator experience. Confidence in those guys probably allows Messingham to be at field level.

However, if ISU continues to struggle with in-game adjustments, I think they will need to consider moving Mess to the both. I am very confident that the 2nd half of the Iowa is not indicative of the ability of our offense. It was simply a half of being somewhat outcoached by a team that is always very solid and well-coached defensively.
Our offense has looked incredible for stretches this year, and I'm very confident the offensive coaching staff will figure out what Iowa did and remedy it. My only concern is how they adjust mid-game, and if they continue to struggle, I think Mess needs to go to the booth to provide more tactical support.

agreed, also there was a bit of wind that very well coulda been affecting the long throws... and hes gotta put it up long so our reciever is the only one with a chance to catch it...

Iowa did such a better job of containing him this year. Our running game was non-existent and we had to rely heavily on our passing game. If only one of those long passes had connected with the receiver!
And that is his weak point.

Again, until we see growth in throwing deeper passes, defenses can load up on us.

He was way, way off on all the long passes...including the one that worked out for us (the PI). He has a hell of an arm though...if he could dial in his timing he could be special.

I think all you guys that are talking about Jantz being horrible need to just go away. Yes, he had a couple bad plays, and I am sure that the coaches will work on this, but you have to give credit to Iowa and their defense for taking away the zone read running attack. I don't know if Iowa saw something that was tippin the play off or just had the defensive answer, but there was absolutely nothing for the RB or QB in the zone read in the second half.

I think after Jantz threw the second int the coaches told him to look at the primary receiver and then eat the ball if he is not open. On the play Horne was wide open he never even looked down field at all.

I said it after last weeks safety and I will say it again, this team need to be able to line up in the I formation in short yardage situations. From the 3 yard line you should be able to run QB sneeks and get in. That is the biggest mistake made by the coaches. Don't give teams a chance to catch you in the backfield! Yes, the exchange from Jantz to White was not good on the fumble, but there were 5 Iowa guys in the backfield when it happened.

Again, until we see growth in throwing deeper passes, defenses can load up on us.

You got it, we can't live all year on the bubble screen. Throwing down field will define our season, we need accuracy and we need it now. SJ is a senior.
