Steele Jantz

Hate to say it, but I feel that his 20 yard run was pure luck. That play could have really been borked.

All sorts of plays are executed on a razor's edge, and Jantz made that play.

I still don't understand why we let off the gas pedal. Iowa's defense was GASSED and we decided it was time to slow our tempo. Then every time we get 3rd and less than 2, just go ahead and pencil in the zone read and shockingly the defensive linemen were standing in the backfield tackling both the QB and the RB.

Yep. We lost momentum by our own play calling and then Iowa fed off of it. There's a reason SJ was 11/11. It was working and then we totally changed gears looking for the big play (which was going to be near impossible with the wind).

In the words of the late, great Al Davis......"Just Win, Baby".

Steele Jantz won today. He got a lot of help from JK and the defense, but he still won. He might not have been the reason we won, but he sure wasn't the only reason it was close.

Save the meltdown for when he really screws the pooch. Let him enjoy this game, and joining Seneca Wallace & Sage Rosenfels in the "didn't lose to Iowa as a starter" club.

People seem to forget that Steele was near perfect in the first half, sans the INT. We looked even better in that half than we did last week and that's saying something. Our offense is at it's best with Jantz in there running it, not Barnett.

A few tough turnovers, but he looked okay. We gotta work on our red zone execution and it'd be nice if he could have hit on one those deep balls!

there is no debate here steele looked great then iowa adjusted and he made some mistakes all qbs make mistakes he is not going to lose his job after leadung his team to a 2 and 0 start

The inability to complete some long balls will make the conference season brutal for ISU. Some how, some way, ISU has to start completing some of those.

We're 2-0 after facing two pretty decent teams. There's absolutely ZERO chance that you bench your QB when you start 2-0 folks.

With that being said... if he plays like he did in the 2nd half today and it starts costing us games.... then all bets are off IMO.

But Messingham gets a C- grade at best from me today, which didn't help Steele much either. 9 pts won't win us another game this season. How many times did we get inside Iowa's 10 yd line today? 9 pts was about as low as you will EVER see a team score with the opportunities we had. The game could have easily been put away numerous times in the 1st half, as well as the 2nd half. Thank God for Jake Knott at the end or I think we lose the game for sure. And there would have been NO reason whatsoever for us to lose that game today.

But Steele won't be benched. Yes, he could have cost us the game, but once again he didn't. Inside the opponent's redzone though, Steele MUST be more careful with the football. FG's aren't better than TD's, but they are way better than coming away with nothing.

Glad we won the game, but once again, just like last year, there's no reason it should have been close IMO.

Don't blame Steele. It was my fault. I didn't put on my lucky shirt until around the 2:50 mark. From the point I skinned it the tide turned back and the D stiffened.

I blame the playcalling in the 2nd, not Jantz

Agree 100%... Seemed the playcalling was very predictable. In the redzone we needed to be trying something different, I hate the read play from the 3 yard line... The last pick was awful, but it seemed like he was less willing to take the sack this week also, I heard mess in an interview say all the sacks last week were on jantz and he can't let that happen... I'll take a sack over forcing throws... I guarantee he will bounce back in a big way next week...

I'm enjoying the hell out of this win and don't want to rain on any parades, but Steele Jantz has never started a game for Iowa State and finished with zero turnovers. I have a difficult time blaming the play calling.

Play calling was brilliant when they executed - First Half. Second half Iowa played much better but I don't think its play calling. Steele made some bad plays but the play calling wasn't that different although I didn't like getting away from the Jet Tempo since it was effective in the first half

Exactly, it is freaking great that we can discuss this in the context of a win. But there is some really poor football IQ on this board for anyone that thinks SJ played marginally well after the 1st Q. Dude dang near single handedly lost the game for us. Amazing how poor the play calling looks when the QB cannot run our bread and butter zone read offense well, let alone turn the ball over twice in red zone.

CPR will do what is best for the team. To date, it is Jantz. And he has time to make better decisions in the passing game. Not sure the zone read is fixable for him. So, we should be rolling him out more and let his natural athletic ability shine.

SJ needs to fall on his knees and pray to the God that is Jake Knott.

Interesting...that is true.

Sharpen it up Steele!

IMO, the debate should be about whether Coach Mess is in the box or on the field, not about Jantz. I think it may actually easier to make technical/play-calling adjustments from the detachment of the box, and a couple more bad 2nd halves will have me questioning that decision to have him on the field.

A lot of posters don't know more than the basics of football. So, when the offense is doing great it's because the QB and when the offense is struggling.... It's because of the QB.

Jantz, besides his last INT, played well today. Our play calling went conservative and we left him in some tough situations. He's getting better folks. Just chill

If we run the zone read two times in a row for zero yards I will freak out

Iowa keyed down on the zone read in the 2nd half to the point where it didn't work. I'm not an offensive coordinator but what I know of the zone read is that the qb reads the defensive end and if he crashes down the qb pulls it out and goes off tackle. But Iowa was crashing the d-end down every play in the 2nd half and walking up the safety most of the time to cover the qb which rendered that play ineffective. We should've gone back to that 2 back set with the zone read/option look. We only ran that once and it worked fairly well.
