Belize - vacation experiences

haven't been but really want to go, have only heard good things. They have some of the best scuba diving in the world if your into that. 2nd biggest reef next to great barrier.
 
Never stayed there, but did do a shore day there once as part of a cruise. Went out and did some snorkeling on the reef. It was great. Spent very little time on land (we were at Belize City). Sounded like there were some rough areas of town to watch out for, but the shopping area near the port was just fine.
 
I've been twice and want to go back. The diving is great if that's your thing so is the the rainforest and visiting some of the mayan ruins. I've spent time doing both. If you can get some time in a resort out in the caye's it's amazing.
 
My wife goes every summer for work (archaeology) and I visit occasionally while she's there.

Belize City is pretty sketchy, but you need to go through it to get from the airport to anywhere else.

Recommend staying out on the cayes for the island getaway experience. Ambergris Caye is much more touristy/resorty with beaches and nicer accommodations. Caye Caulker is quieter with less luxury but IMO it's the better experience. You can stay in a hotel (usually pretty small, like only 8-12 units) or you can rent a cabin/cabaña. You can do a half-day trip to go snorkeling or fishing off the coast.

Inland, Belize is not very big but the road network isn't great, so it takes awhile to get anywhere. Definitely recommend checking out the Maya ruins (where my wife works). Belize is also pretty close to Guatemala (highly recommend Flores/Tikal) and Cancun/Yucatan, so you can make it a bigger trip if you want.

You do have to be a little careful as some of the locals will target ostensibly wealthy white tourists, so I'd advise against flashy jewelry and such and just maintain a low profile while you're there.

I spent a week on Ambergris Caye in San Pedro. Island life is spendy, so if you go to the island, be prepared.

The Blue Hole is supposed to be one of those most unique diving places in the world. The ruins are neat as well. Cenotes are common in the area as well and worth a visit if you have never been.

I've spent a lot of time in the southern end of the Yucatan and for the money and the scenery, I think I would rather hang out in Playa Del Carmen or Tulum over Belize.

Belize had a shaddy sort of feel for me.
 
Wear a gallon of sunscreen and then reapply every hour. It's hot. Snorkling is great there. Lots of beautiful ocean life.

This! In fact Belkin is cheaper than your typical USA beer down there. I suggest staying on one of the Islands that Tejasclone mentioned prior. We were told not to stay in Belize City so stay elsewhere. Tejasclone has some good insight.

I suggest staying on the main Islands a couple days. It appeared that a lot of the scientists and students that were studying in the rain forest (mainland) would come out to the Islands to relax for a few days.

We rented cats for a week and lived on the water. We would stop at various islands, populated and not. Mooring at one island, we took the dingy and found a fishing camp to buy fresh fish. This was one of the fisherman and his girlfriend that came down to us. Let’s just say, his mouth was probably dry and was eating nachos shortly after we left. Anyway, tipped him for taking a few moments to talk and let me take photos. Note the wall of Conch shells that run several hundred of yards along shore.

The second photo has our cats that we lived on. We stopped on this desolated island and snorkeled. While down there, I read "The Old Man and the Sea" it was cool.

I say go for it if you get the chance!
