Getting a New Phone... Help Decide!

I have the HTC One X and I absolutely love it. (Basically the same phone as the EVO 4G LTE on Sprint). I could never go back to a small screen like the iPhone again.

iPhone 4S, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Beautiful phone. Check Amazon for Otterbox cases, the $50 ones are like $22 on there.

You really need to see them in person. I don't like the MotoBlur UI and really like the Sense of my HTC. Don't know about the Samsung, but I have heard good things about the S3. Just not sure I can trust Samsung small electronics after the camera of theirs I bought

You can't compare bars to bars to determine if one phone has better reception than the other.

That said, if one phone is constantly roaming in a location where the other is not, that is a little more telling. Hopefully if there is anything to this it can be addressed in a software fix, because I am leaning Galaxy III myself.

Agree about the bars comparison. I was more concerned in that thread about the dropped calls and roaming.

I still have an old HTC Mogul, our house number is an HTC Hero, and my wife's phone is the HTC Evo Shift. From a signal standpoint, the Evo Shift is clearly the worst of the three. We travel quite a bit to more rural areas, and the Evo Shift has trouble finding network where the other two don't. Sprint replaced the Evo Shift once because of a GPS problem, but they both behave(d) the same way. So anyway, the reports of the Galaxy roaming issues caught my attention.

The link below shows some snippets from the Galaxy S3 manual indicating areas where the user should not touch the phone in order to avoid blocking the internal antennas. Interesting...

So, you believe that Google and Samsung came up with the form factors, layouts and features 100% independent of Apple? Even though Scmidt was on Apple's BOD? And did Apple impose the injunction or did the judge? Why is google developing a work around if they are innocent?

No need to respond as I will be off adding up the boatload of money I made From my Apple stock.:twitcy:

You believe that Apple invented 'flat screen on a rectangular device'? Not a whole lot you can do with that form factor. Phones these days are basically PDAs and there were PDAs with that form factor back in the 90s. ****, star trek had similar looking devices 20 years ago if you want to talk prior art. Once phones boiled down to their bare minimum (just a screen) there isnt a whole lot of ways to go (notice that tv manufacturers arent suing each other despite almost every tv looking damn near identical these days)

The judge, who has shown a lack of knowledge of tech in general allowed the injunction, after apple posted a large amount of money for it to happen. Injunctions are highly irregular in this sort of situation, typically if there is any issue damages are assessed for misuse, but not outright blocks of sale of a device for a minor aspect of its software alleged as infringing.

Google is developing a workaround so they can continue to sell the phone while they appeal. Has nothing to do with being innocent or not and everything to do with trying to make the best of a ****** situation caused by our broken patent system.

I'd highly suggest the Evo 4G lte. I got mine on launch day and its been great. The camera is awesome and its fast as hell. I too was worried about the non-removable battery but its been better than any other phone I've had. With moderate usage I can get about 40 hours or so out of one charge.
Also, they recently released full root on the device which couldn't have been easier.

40 hours? Are you serious? I don't know if I believe. But the rooting on samsung phones are hard as **** I've heard. That definitely sways me toward the EVO...

Wish I could find a website that actually tested and published radio performance in a more scientific manner, as I would be very interested in seeing this to help in phone purchasing decisions. Obviously, the ability to pick up a signal and make a call is important in a phone. As is, the best you typically see is a comment in a review that call quality was good, or some anecdotal stuff like this on message boards. It shouldn't be that hard to do for someone who is already doing hardware reviews.

Whoa, I have no idea where you are hearing that. If you are getting in to rooting, I would give the advantage to Samsung. The new EVO has a locked bootloader, which must be unlocked in order to root or flash custom software. As I understand it, you can re-lock it, but they can still see that it was previously unlocked and that voids your warranty.

Samsung, on the other hand, does not lock the bootloader. In addition, Samsung also has the Odin tool that can be used to make firmware changes to the device via a PC. This tool can be incredibly valuable allowing you to recover a bricked phone. As far as I know, there is nothing like this available for HTC devices.

I have rooted previous galaxy devices, and the process is very easy.

DH and I have had the Samsung Aviator for oh, nearly 3 weeks now. My first smartphone, his second. I'm fine with it. We looked at the S3, but Aviator had more current OS and bigger screen. We're on US Cellular.
I'm thinking smart phones are evolving to be bag-phone size eventually.

I think you mean the S2 because the S3 is the best hardware and software wise, especially on U.S. Cellular.

You are correct. I'd looked at the S3 online before going to the store and decided it wasn't worth that much, at least for my use.

We do get G4 on the aviator, so that's a plus for me.

I've had everything from blackberries to the palm pre to google nexus...

went to the iphone 4s 2 weeks ago.... favorite by far - battery lasts a lifetime

Didn't read the thread, but it's plain and simple. If you want a smartphone that works and does what you want it to, get the iPhone. If you don't, get a droid or blackberry or whatever.

Dead serious. Had an iPhone, switched to the atrix, broke the contract 6 months in to go back to an iPhone. I hated the android platform with an undying passion. I bought the hype, everybody talking about how customizable they were and how much better than an iPhone they were. Bullsh*t, all of it. The battery sucked, apps crashed all the time and it was slow. Get a droid or whatever. It doesn't hurt my feelings. But from somebody that used both platforms, my opinion, iPhone works. The rest...take your chances.

How is ATT service in Ames? I was visiting Iowa City this past weekend, and if you get too far off I-80, the bars/signal get really weak. Everybody told me Verizon is best in Iowa.
