I honestly don't know what the rule is, I just happen to do it correctly. Actually, that applies to most grammar rules and me using them properly - I don't necessarily know what the rule is, I just happen to know proper usage.

This website may explain as clearly as anyone can. The one question I missed was a that/which question.

I don't know if this is the rule for everything that deals with that/which, but if there is a common in the sentence then it is "which" and if there is not a common then it is "that." So I think it has something to do with a dependent/independent clauses.
