Dam to Dam

I had a number, trained hard and was looking forward to it. Then, I had to have surgery on Wednesday. I was in Iowa Methodist up until 10 this AM, and wouldn't you know, they put the finish line just about below my room window!

When I got out, I went down there and handed back my timing chip (my wife picked up my race packet for me last night). I was a different kind of race for me, but my best finish ever!

Hope You are doing OK!

If anyone found a pair of Oakley Half-jackets near the bag drop-off, they're mine. Other than that, I had to stop and pee around mile 9 but my time was better than I was expecting. Not exactly sure what it was yet but under 1:42. Forgot to stop my watch and didn't look at the timer when I crossed.

I had a goal of 1:35 and got 1:33. My best D2D yet. The after party was a good time. Nothing like having a beer at 9AM.

Congrats everyone on their finishes and sorry to those that were injured.

CyinCo, we finished very close to each other.I had my best also at 1:32.33. I may pull a Costanza and end on a high note in my D2D career.

I didn't die, so that was good. It actually went much better than I would have anticipated and finished 1:58:59 when my goal was 2 hours. Still ****** about the 2 minute kybo stop I had to make at mile 2...it was unbearable and at that point there weren't many places where stopping in the woods seemed appropriate.

How did everyone do?
I got through about 11 miles just fine and was going to be right around my goal, but man, the last 1.4 just killed me. Was feeling like puking the whole time and wasn't able to finish strong at all.
My 10k time was actually faster than the 10k I ran last weekend. Ended in 1:57 by my watch. Spent a lot of time early on trying to weave through groups of people running together. I can understand running with someone, but when you are going 4-5 wide (especially in this race), that makes it really tough on others.

I had the same problem. Somewhere between 11 and 11.5 miles, I hit the wall. But I kept my feet moving to the finish line and was really happy with my 1:50 time. I was aiming for 1:55.

After the first mile, I didn't really have a hard time finding a path through the crowd, but it is a little dicey there at the beginning just trying not to trip over someone.

It was a great time (other than the hard finish), and I'm definitely doing it again.

I did not train enough, but I was signed up, so I did it. Hit the wall HARD at mile 10, but didn't stop running. Cramped up in my right hamstring the last 400 meters, but got in at 2:06. Slower by 4 minutes from last year.

At least I beat my friend's wife, she did it in 2:15...............7 months pregnant! I never would have heard the end of that if she would have beat me ;)

Congrats to everyone that ran and finished, I will be back for more next year, hopefully better prepared!

Hah, I made it to mile 8 or 9 before I thought I was going to explode so had to stop. Fortunately there was an open kybo so didn't cost me much time.

Which brings up the question for you seasoned runners. How do you avoid this situation in longer runs? I hit the kybo right before going to the starting line but still couldn't make it without stopping.

How much water did you drink on race morning? I only had probably 15-20oz and a kybo trip before the start was enough until after the race. Felt bad for the guys diving into the woods to relieve themselves. Saw a poor guy who had an "accident" of the #2 kind around mile 9. Hope he made it to some fresh shorts!

I'm of the opinion that you can over-hydrate before the race. My advice would be to drink a lot of water the day before the race, but scale it back to normal about 12 hours before the start of the race. Then drink 20oz about an hour (or less, whatever works for you) before the race.

Following this plan, I didn't need to stop for either the DSM half last fall or Dam to Dam on Saturday.

Yes! Very close. I'm considering the same. I don't believe I can improve anymore. Considering the 5k for next year. I think I could run a sub 20 minute.

2013 roll call.

Who's in? Who's out.

I'm looking for a Garmin Forerunner 310 or 610 if anybody is selling one.

did it last year, lame. don't mean to be a debbie downer but you get so amped up thinking it will be tough, but its so packed, alot of small running corridors, you can't take off. but the beers afterwards were good.

dammit, just saw this was 2012.

Just curious, where did you start (time runners) what was your finish time?

i did the earlham one, around 3ish, it was pushing 100 for temps at the time also. i was running with the wife and 2 of her gimpy co-workers. i finished at 27 minutes +/-. you can't really do this run for time unless you are near the front. another co-worker did the same time though, slipped to the front and finished in 19. the fastest time for the day was around 17 minutes i believe.
