I think the SEC has first dibs on VT, unfortunately for us.

My guess is that they've made their mark and will succeed without Beamer. They're the premier program in a large and growing state, and even if they do dip a little, it's all about market penetration; this would be new, valuable turf for the SEC.

When I was a teenager and then undergrad in the late 80s and 90s, they were a very good basketball school, and had a couple of good football runs.

It's not necessarily the greatest logic. I just spent a lot of time back then cheering for them, so they'd be fun to have.

Not enough to start a blog. Just a fan wish.
I think it would be an easy sell to them. Just promise them Kansas every year.

I think you're right, but getting FSU to come with them might make it able for the big 12 snatch them right now. I think the SEC will want to see how 14 works for a few years before adding anyone, Va Tech could cash in right now in the big 12. I think its a longshot but the timing of the FSU situation could make them nervous enough to leave for the money quick.

Even among AAU members, they're the cream of the cream, especially for large public schools. But this is about athletics and TV money, and they offer a popular program with history in a large and growing market; that should count for something.

They played for the NC as recently as 2004 (although it's been downhill since then). Remember that 7 ft.+ Schetcher (sp?) guy with the curly orange white boy 'fro?
 
I rarely go look at HN (and usually it's only after an Iowa loss) but it's hilarious to see the posts about conference realignment. Denial, denial, denial... everywhere :yes:

That's cool. About the same reasons I have for pulling for Clemson to join. Went to a week-long training course a few years ago at the National Brick Research Center, which is part of Clemson. Had a good time, met some cool Clemson folks, and have a couple Clemson Tiger shirts to show for it.

I've been to Atlanta a handful of times, and you'd barely know that GT was there. I really don't think they are that popular there. I don't think they deliver much of the Atlanta TV market at all.

I've been to Atlanta a handful of times, and you'd barely know that GT was there. I really don't think they are that popular there. I don't think they deliver much of the Atlanta TV market at all.

Also, I want CPR to break Dabo Sweeney's heart the same way he does for every other coach with a big-name program.

Yes...yes there is:

I personally don't think the Big 10 will expand at all for awhile. As far as the Big 12 goes, I think they're more likely to add Louisville and Cincinnati or BYU.

Call me old school...but to thrive, conferences still need some degree of geographic integrity.

The Big Ten, SEC, PAC 10, ACC, Big 12, Big East all have that.

Northwestern delivers roughly zero of the Chicago TV market. Minnesota is an afterthought in the MSP sports hierarchy. Yet, their conference leveraged its way onto television in those areas just because that's where the schools are -- not because of how many people are actually watching at any given time.

The difference is in how the conferences make their money. Minnesota would be worth a lot less to the big 12 because we dont have a conference network taking a cut of every single cable bill in the states the big 12 operates in. Our money is based on projected ratings.
