Enterprise, IA

Whenever I drive by Ankeny on 35, my GPS shows a little town nearby called Enterprise. I had never heard of it before, so I googled it. Does anyone know if this is actually a town? On google maps, it just shows a couple of houses and farm buildings. I know this is random, but for some reason I have a fascination with tiny towns like this.

Yes, I am bored at the moment

Back to the topic:

I'm fairly certain that Enterprise was once a small coal mining town much like Carney. Ankeny had many of these type of communities around it's perimeter. I do know there are shafts on the farm ground you pass between Ankeny and Enterprise.

You can always check out Alpha, Iowa about 3 miles south of Waucoma. We used to go there in high school to get Alpha burgers (1 lb burgers with saute'd onions and green peppers). Not sure if the alpha tap and pool still exists though.

I had dinner at the Alpha Tap the night that Utah slaughtered 'Bama in that Sugar Bowl. That would have been ~3 years ago, and they were going strong.

Isn't Enterprise the town that claims to be the future birthplace of James T. Kirk of Star Trek fame (who was born in Iowa). I think they also have a statue of the starship Enterprise somewhere in town.

EDIT: I'm thinking of Riverside, Iowa.

Peterson in Clay and Orchard in Mitchell are two of my favorites, mainly for family history reasons

If you really want to see towns like this, just check out the RAGBRAI map every year. They put a few of these unincorporated and former towns on the route every year. People are so pleased when they find the "town" after a twenty mile stretch is nothing but two farm houses and an extra driveway that leads to nothing.

Check out Maryville, Iowa. It is across Highway 3 from Starmont High School (between Lamont and Arlington). There used to be a creamery, a house, a gas station and a cafe. I don't know if the last three are even there anymore.
