No way the aim was for him to start or get significant minutes his FR year.

Apparently the staff recognized it as a miss before the season. I have no idea how much progress was made during the season.

I love Bubu, but he should only get a scholarship if we can't land a bigger fish.
Tis true. The whole operation is to overall upgrade talent on the whole team. Run with the big boys, play with the big boys. That said, we will miss him. He had a good year after a tough start.

On that note, the staff had a similar feeling about Railey after the Italy trip.

So, really these decisions aren't a surprise, but that doesn't make their presence on the team any less appreciated.

I will just be curious to see what Fred does next.

Agree. I hope they kick *** wherever they end up and make us regret them leaving.

I'm sure Bubu is a great guy...but he is not a Big XII scholarship calibur player. I cringe when I watch him. I understand that he has put in his time and busted his butt, but I dont think that means you get a scholarship if there are better options out there. That being said, if there is a scholarship left over, he should get it.

Maybe McDermott will take Railey.

As for Bubu, Paul Shirley attended ISU on a National Merit Scholarship. Ames High is a good school and dad's a prof, maybe Bubu has some good academic scholarships.

I just realized that this news is why we didn't hear anything official initially when the Sledge rumors were heating up. They wanted to (and did) put out one press release for them both.

He can't. Academic scholarships count towards scholarships on the team. The only difference is that scholarship wouldn't be paid for out of the AD's pocket.

There are some cases where academic scholly's don't count - primarily if the player was never a recruited player. I would think this would be entirely thrown out the window now that he has for a time been on athletic scholly.

Take a look at NCAA regs on counting scholarships.

If Bubu transfers, we can stop the stupidity about a walk on deserving a schollie.

Bubu was being recruited as a division 1 athlete in soccer and the ncaa almost didn't let him be a walk-on. Bubu was in the grey area because he was from ames, but imo he is a division 1 athlete who should need to be on scholarship.

The thought that he could get academic scholarships without counting against our 13 limit is also wrong. Think of how much that would be abused by big time programs with 13 athletic scholarships and 5 "academic" scholarship players.

and good luck to Sledge and Railey wherever they end up

When I lived in Dayton, Ohio, I know they gave free tuition to children of faculty at Wright State University (which is public). I guess I'd assume they do this at all public schools in Ohio. It's a state by state basis it seems. But yea, definitely not true for ISU.

Wish that were the case at ISU. I would have saved a bundle.

Bubu earned his scholly and deserves to keep it. Also, he'll graduate and have a good GPA, which is something every BCS conference school can use. He definitely proves his worth.
