Lane violation calls were correct

Sorry if this was already posted, but the nation was going crazy over the lane violation call in the Syracuse game. The call was correct. Chris Allen got the same violation called on him during one of White's free throws. Rule 9, Section 1, Article 2, Part G states:


Players not in a legal marked lane space shall remain behind the freethrow
line extended and behind the three-point field-goal line until
the ball strikes the ring, flange or backboard, or until the free throw
ends.

Watch the replays and you will see that both calls were correct. It doesn't matter if it is rarely called or not.

They are the correct calls, but the real point is that it seems to have been suddenly enforced as a March 15 only call. That's another example of why college basketball is a joke except for the awesome tournament format. They clearly need to do more to get national D1 officiating on the same page for an entire season. This is just one example.

I was more upset about the blatant and deliberate (I don't think there is any other way to not describe it as that) blown out of bounds call in the 'Cuse UNC-Ashville game.

Right or wrong, you don't make those calls. Leave it to the NCAA to go all season without calling it, and then start calling it in the tournament.

Worst part is, CA didn't try to go after the rebound. He just sort of walked in behind Royce.

Maybe this should be a point of emphasis at the beginning of the season and not in the ncaa tournament.

Maybe I'm out of it but I don't remember seeing players regularly come in from the 3-point line before the ball hit the rim during the regular season. I'd be more upset if the refs were suddenly picky about the players on the lane entering early...they NEVER call that during the regular season.

Bingo. I'd like to think I'd notice something like that during the year.

Exactly. Only in college basketball do things like this happen in terms of nationally televised sports.

You don't suddenly see some obscure penalty called for the first time in bowl season.

NBA officiating is biased and crooked but it's incredibly consistent. LeBron gets to take 3-5 steps without dribbling and gets to push off as long as it's not elbow to face. This is frustrating for non-LeBron-fans but the refs don't suddenly change it in the playoffs. It's not one ref that lets it slide and another enforces it. It's consistent.

I realize the problem is that no other major team sport with officials has 300 some teams and up to 100 games a day going on, but there has to be some way to get these officials on the same page across the nation for the course of a season.

There isn't. Too many rules with too much room for interpretation. I just hope most of the crews are guys who have worked a lot of games together and know how they work as a group so you don't get one whistle happy guy who calls everything and more and then two who will let the players play some.
