thats a big upset, right? I love the shorts, but i really dont follow the sport.
Wisc was the 7 seed, Cal is #10. Wisc is hosting the regional - with them out we ought to have some crowd advantage. Having played NU and Texas prepares us to play anyone.
If you were to compare it to basketball, Wisconsin is the #2 seed in the region. They are the #7 seed for the overall tournament. ISU was one of the last teams in the tourney and we just swept the #2 seed 3-0 on their home court. It's a big deal.
You can't really equate the seeding processes for anyone lower than the actual top 16 seeds. Volleyball is still very much a regional sport. That's why ISU has gone to Madison twice in a row, and that's why UNI went up there this year.
Teams bid to host rounds 1 and 2, just like basketball. The pairings are based on a combination of seeding and which teams bids were the best (i.e. $$$). It's very difficult to find 4 teams all within a small geographic area where none of those teams are in the same conference. Volleyball isn't self-sufficient enough to have all 4 teams coming in from long distances, just because the fan base isn't there.
Most of the time with volleyball, they'll get at least 3 of the 4 teams from a close distance -- in this case Wisconsin, ISU, UNI. The fourth team is usually just out of luck (San Diego). Just from this year's tournament so far:
*Minnesota traveled to Stanford with two other California teams
*Cal Poly (seeded!) traveled to Ohio, along with Purdue and Xavier
*Oregon traveled to KSU with Missouri State and Tulsa
*UCLA (seeded!) traveled to Clemson with Alabama and Alabama A&M
...and that's just from 1 "region".
If the basketball tournament is regional, then why was ISU the westernmost team of the 8 in Boise in 2001? (ISU, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Maryland, Georgia State, George Mason [Va.], Georgetown [D.C.], and the Team That Shall Not be Named [Va.]) Had the seeds held true, your 4 teams in Anaheim would have been Stanford, ISU, Maryland, Indiana.
Arizona was a #2 that was sent to Kansas City.
