I noticed he officiated the KU/MU game last night. How long has he been officiating Big 12 games and the like? He was my boss when I was an intramural official in 96/97 and he would officiate the ISU exhibition games and some lower tier D1 games. Is he still an ISU employee?

Randy has been doing MVC and Big XII games for over 6-7 years, at least... those are his two conferences last i knew. I worked for him as well from 1999-2004, and got to do Iowa high school football and basketball reffing through him too.

Randy proved that he's a boss tonight. I also worked as an intramural ref/supervisor and was sad to see him leave ISU.

Randy taught me to ref as well. Very eye-opening experience. Fun to hear his stories of getting an earful from Larry as well as (screamed) apologies from him as well.

EDIT:
Also, Holy Thread Resurrection, Batman!

I loved Randy's mini stories (please don't ban me)

"If you're reffing a game with your friends and the other team sees you playing grab *** with your buddies. They're telling themselves, 'Well, grab your ankles boys, because we're getting ****ed by the refs tonight.'"

He had a lot of classic ones.

I remember that one too! Always enjoyed his stories of officiating in the Big 12 too... He had some good ones with Bob Knight. He helped teach me how to officiate, expanded from intramural games to elementary, Jr high, JV and varsity for a while. Great guy and funny as hell.

I don't think it has really been answered but he left in spring of 2008. He became a rep for Nike and which allowed him more time to ref BB games. By then he was pretty much doing Big 12 games.

I agree with many on here that Randy was pretty good boss and his reffing stories were awesome.

He was a neighbor of mine from back home and went to Irwin-Kirkman (back then) school with him. He has always been a good guy and saw him around Ames a few times.

My friends dad knew Randy pretty well. I'll never forget this story.

Bob Knight: "That was the worst ******* call I've ever seen!"

Randy: "Yes, It was." (while reffing one of Bob's games)

Bob Knight: "Well at least you know it..."

HAHA I couldn't imaging getting yelled at by Bob Knight!

Randy and I reffed/supervised IMs and some High School ball back when I was in grad school 89-91. I reffed HS ball for 15 years but had to give it up for my day job as I was traveling internationally a ton. Randy took the opposite track, choosing a day job that gave him flexibility to travel for reffing. Good for him!

Am I crazy or is Randy reffing the UNI game vs Loyola?

His dad always used to scare the crap out of me just by the tone of his voice. His dad got the nickname "Hammerhead" because he would never listen to anyone's ideas. It was always his way or no way.
