My better half and I will be going to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon this summer. We will be staying near San Juan, and I was curious how many CF'ers have been there. Any advice on what to see/do/eat/stay away from or just general reminiscing would be greatly appreciated.

Visited San Juan last February. Stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel in Isla Verde. It was spectacular. Awesome pools with bar service as well as another bar on the beach. Night life in old San Juan is great, especially if you like live salsa music and Cuba libres. One of the only notable specialty foods there was the mofongo, which is basically a fried cake of plantains and usually pork covered with more meat/seafood (usually of your choice).

Schedule a half day for hiking around El Yunque if you're into that kind of thing. Try and go on a clear day so that you can get good views of the island from the top. Otherwise you will be in the clouds.

The Bacardi Distillery is not far from San Juan (15 mins max) and the tour is free. You get 2 free rum cocktails at the end. Definitely worth it. If you want to bring back some really good Puerto Rican rum that is almost impossible to find here, grab a few bottles of this: Barrilito - Ron del Barrilito Three Star - Rum Review - Ministry of Rum

It is about $20 at any local grocery store and is unbelievably good.

Snorkeling.

This is who my wife and I used (hotel can easily arrange for you): Snorkel and Snorkeling Excursions in Puerto Rico

All these and if you can take a day or two to the small islands, culebra and another one, they are suppose to have fantastic beaches. You have to take a ferry or small plane to get there. If there is a crescent moon the bio bays are cool.

These are just to the east of Puerto Rico. I didn't get to go due to limited time while attending a conference but they were highly recommended. Other people went by ferry and really enjoyed it.

You're thinking of Vieques. My wife and I spent a week there, and loved every second of it. Not too touristy, and it's not hard to find a secluded stretch of beach for sunbathing and...other stuff.

Is Puerto Rico a good spot to visit if you have children around 10yrs old? Enough to keep them busy and enjoying a vacation or is it better for adults only?

The resort I stayed at had a lot of kids. Volleyball nets, small pools, protected beach, and the whole complex was fenced (ie. no random people on the beach). Very family friendly destination IMO.

We went past their private island and beach on our snorkeling trip. It looked legit! Oh, a tram (gondola-like) up and down from the main resort looked sweet too.

The second to last night we are there our group is having a party on the island... Should be alot of fun.. We also have alot of activites planned for the week and I'm really looking forward to the golf.

I went there a couple years ago on spring break with my wife and some friends. We rented a condo for the time we were there (link) and found this really great restaurant right on the beach just to the northeast, I believe it was part of a hotel. Eat there just before dusk and your wife will thank you.

Someone already mentioned the Ron del Barrilito rum, I highly recommend it also.

We stayed here about 15 years ago and at the time it was the 3rd rated best resort in the world. It has a small casino and part of a James Bond movie was filmed in it. Michael Jordan was checking out the day we were checking in. I also saw Joe Dumars and Grant Hill in the casino one night.

On the far side of their private island is a topless beach too.

Thx! What about general travel around San Juan with kids. Safe??

Safe in the tourist areas like Old San Juan, but I wouldn't go venturing out on a self-guided walking tour or anything as their are slums directly adjacent. Even then, I never felt like I was in danger, even the criminals are fairly protective of their tourist dollars.
