New WR coach?

I don't know who else it'd be other than Flynn. Flynn now has some college coaching experience. Would be a perfect hire.

Flynn would be an awesome recruiter if he takes his cheerleader wife along.

But none of our current staff really have a connection to Flynn, so I'm not really sure that's an obvious pick.

If there's any position group that could use some fresh perspectives, it's the wide receivers. All he needs to be able to do is teach the receivers proper technique with catching the ball and running routes. Those skills just get plugged into the schemes Messingham produces.

A possible good hire would be Kent Anderson. former ISU wr with a lot of coaching experince. Current HFC at Iowa Wesleyan College. great recruiter.

I just found something on TexAgs stating that he may have been picked up for Sumlins staff.

Curse you a$m scum!!!

Yeah, I think that Beatty's on ATM's staff. Too bad, because he would have been the perfect hire. Personally, I'm not getting the desire to hire Flynn. Don't get me wrong, I loved him as a player, but he has all of ONE year of experience at the (lower) college level. He coached HS in TX for a few years and was promoted to DC there. And I think that he coaches D at Grandview (position coach). If it were anyone except for Flynn, who is an all-time fan favorite, people would laugh the suggestion of him coaching WRs at ISU off this board. I don't know that ISU should be hiring someone who not only has never coached at the D1 level, but never coached on the offensive side of the ball at all.

I'd like to see them hire someone who has experience coaching WRs AND experience recruiting Texas. Shouldn't be too difficult...start looking at SMU's, Houston's, Rice's, UTEP's WR coaches.

Yeah... that's why in my post earlier in this thread I commented on Flynn's ability to coach WR's. I'm thinking that he really doesn't have the resume or experience that Rhoads would like. It doesn't matter that you were a Cyclone favorite, or that you might be able to recruit well in Texas, if you can't coach WR's.

We desperately need a good hire in this area too. Our WR's have not been very good at all. Maybe it's been poor recruiting, I don't know. But our WR's have not performed the way you need them to in order to have success. And what troubles me the most about that is the fact that we promoted our WR coach to OC. I know Mess only worked with the WR's for one year, but they still didn't light the world on fire.

I guess I'm a bit concerned why Rhoads put such a high preference on keeping the same offense in place with the hiring from within, when that offense stunk it up almost every single Saturday? But we'll see what happens. I trust Rhoads to do the right thing. I'm just not sure if Flynn has the coaching experience we need right now to coach our WR's or not?

I don't think that you can put too much on Messingham. I believe that the WRs improved quite a bit this season. More big plays, more run after catch, less drops. Now, they still weren't great by any means, but I thought that Mess did a decent job with the talent on hand especially given the inconsistancy at QB.

I'm not concerned about the offensive scheme. I think that it works IF you have a QB that is accurate and WRs that can catch. It would also help if you didn't have two OL that picked up false start penalties like they were spare ribs at Hickory Park.

What I AM a little concerned about is there recruiting numbers. Seems like they take the shotgun approach to recruiting WRs. Just sign as many as possible and hope that one turns out. Every year, they bring in another 4 guys. This year, they have three already committed and here comes in Chance Allen on a visit in a few weeks. How about looking for a LB, since they'll have all of 4 scholarship players this spring and 7 total scholarship LBs next fall? How about a DE since Aka is the only HS DE in the class and even he is questionable at that position. How about a CB since the only one they have committed is Rogers and he played QB in HS and may end up playing Safety? I see zero reason to sign 4 WRs in this class...especially if Bundrage is as good as they're saying.
