make the Dance next year. Even if Dante can play the 1 next year we still don't have anyone who can step in immediately and play the 2 at a big 12 level. Brackins will be a sophomore and Wesley will be a Junior. If either of them have the type of season I expect them to have, one or both will leave early. Therefore you need to get someone who can step in right away and play next year, its your best angle.

Why? More than likely he'll screw up somehow and leave yet another hole and another year of disappointment.

Brackins is a once in a lifetime player and Johnson is a stud. If you are going to make a run at it, you need to fill the hole with someone who can contribute right away.

I understand that juco's are a patch the ship option but how else are you going to get a back court that can put us at .500 or above in the conference next year?

If he doesn't pan out, he doesn't pan out, but recruit to win just like you play to win.

I am not saying I don't want to bring in solid freshmen to build a base, but if you bring in freshmen and wait for them to develop CB and WJ will be gone...along with the tourney hopes.

TOTALLY agree. Bring in the best JC PG you can find. If Garrett or Buckley can beat him out, so be it. But taking 3/4 of the shot clock just to get into the offense and no dribble penetration is a sure way to lose. GMac needs to take advantage of talents like Brackins and WJ, not wait until underclassmen develop.

Amen. Instant upgrade. Frankly, I expected better guard play than this. I did see Harroison Barnes outpay all our current guards in scrimmage though. That was an eye opener, but now I know that he may be. Harrison is not robotic. He is a natural.

Frankly I don't think we need another shooting guard or point guard. I think the missing link is a guy like Damion Staple. We need a guy who can rebound and put the ball back up after the rebound. Our guards are all young. You have to give them time. Garrett will be a ton better when he get's stronger. Our new point guard next year is way more college ready than Garrett.

Having lived thru the glen anderson years...I'm getting ready for a lot of bad years of mediocre basketball...boy do I miss the Orr/Floyd and Eustacy years....

I have seen nothing from Brackins or Wesley to make me think they would be leaving early at this point. We tried the Juco route last year, look where it got us.

Jiri and Clark will be gone. GREAT news is Petersen, Haluska, Thompson are all juniors so we only have to stomach them for 1 more years. CJ is only a soph so we will have to wait him out (has no Big 12 ability and if he does why hasnt he shown it ONE time since coming to ISU). People in the crowd were saying how wonderful Haluska's D was last night... well im sure about every D1 defensive back could also play shutdown D in basketball, but it doesnt mean you are a basketball player. Peterson can shoot the rock, but cant dribble out of a wet paper bag.

Im not knocking the guys' effort.. they are trying very hard. Its more of the fact that ability is ability. You either have it or you dont.

Brackins, Wes and Lucca are the only players we have now that are returning who are really Big 12 quality.... well also add Diante (maybe Boozer.... Maybe) to that list. Vette needs a chance to grow.

That means we NEED a shooting guard and point guard.... damn we need all positions.

Not trying to "stir the pot," but in this case, I'd have to agree with your screen name when it comes to this topic!

If we had decent gaurds, Wes would be the guy you're referring to (he will just score more than Staple did). Do you remember how many rebounds and second chance points Wes scored last year?

I agree with the majority of the posts here - our gaurd play is not good! We need Diante to get good really fast for this year to be at all successful. From what I've heard, Buckley is the real deal next year as a great ball handler & with Lucca next year, I'm crossing my fingers we're going to be alright. This year scares me!

I know that getting rid of Mike Taylor was the right decision for the team & program. I applaud the move. But, if he was still around, I think we would have won all three of our last games!

This Team Needs a Scorer

I like Garrett's play so far this year. IMO by Feb/Mar he will be a serviceable PG. Give him an off season to get stronger and I think he will be a solid PG next year. Add Buckley to the equation & IMO the PG position is solid.

We miss a Curtis Stinson type guy- a kid who can handle the ball and score driving to the hoop or shooting the 3. At this point our best hope for finding this type of kid for the 08/09 season is probably at the JUCO level.

Depending if Thompson ever emerges from his funk or Vette shows enough improvement to be a starter next year- we might need a JUCO post player also. That would allow Vette, Hamilton & Mann to come along slowly.

I'd be surprised if Lucca sticks around

I haven't heard anything from Lucca in the news today, but everything I've read/heard over the last month makes it sound like Lucca will bolt and return to Germany to play.

I think you have some valid points. I feel what we need most is a Jake Sullivan guy. A true shooting guard. This would stretch other team's defenses, because they would have to come out and guard him. This would allow our post players to open things up. There is no true shooter on this team. Peterson can shoot, but he is not a great shooter. Other than him, I don't think we have a guard who is even an average shooter.

We could use a Stinson player as well. Someone who can create their own shot, and can take their man to the hole. Garrett seems to be the best option for this. He is very quick. Stinson was great at this, but he was far from a great shooter. If he was a better shooter, he would definitely be in the NBA.

Post wise, there is promise. Vette, CJ, and especially Brackins have showed some strong moves, and I think will continue to get better. I do think that the Hawks were wise to let ole' #5 go, and free up a scholarship. AT is flat out awful.

You're exactly right ajk4st8! I've had season tickets since 1976 and think I know talent when I see it. Haluska, Peterson, Thompson and Cory Johnson are not D-1 level players and unfortunately they are all getting plenty of playing time. UNI and Minnesota both clearly had more quick athletic players than we did. I think GMAC is a good coach and we have some good young talent, but we need a lot more. This may be a long year, but Wes, Brackins, Rashon and Garrett give us plenty of hope for a few upsets. The painful question is: Why did GMAC give AT a schollie?
