The Marlins aren't playing games with Albert Pujols. According to a Major League source, the Marlins are serious about signing the free agent first baseman and intend to make a competitive offer. Pujols was in South Florida on Friday, lunching with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and other front office executives, who have spent the past week wooing other high-profile free agents, including Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle. The Marlins also planned on giving Pujols a tour of their new ballpark, where later tonight the team will unveil its new logo and uniforms.

Pujols is the big prize in this year's free agent class and has reportedly received a nine-year, $200 million offer from the Cardinals to remain in St. Louis. Sources say that Loria, in particular, covets Pujols and envisions him at first base when the Marlins open their new stadium on April 4 -- against the World Series champion Cardinals.

If the Marlins were somehow able to snag Pujols, it would seem inconceivable that they'd also land Reyes or Buehrle without increasing payroll to well over $100 million. But Loria is calling most of the shots now and is intent on creating a splash, both on the field and cosmetically, as the Marlins prepare to move into their new ballpark.

Pujols as a Marlin...so stupid and unrealistic....that it might actually happen. I think you can live with 200 mil, Albert. Get your wine and dine on and then get your *** back to the S.T.L.

Pretty sure I called this on here a year ago... They will get him or Reyes and try to make a big splash with a starter and bullpen guy...

No chance Pujols is not a red bird next year. The other teams will set the market value and the birds will be close enough.

This is it................part of the process of Albert understanding the market so STL can appease him. It was encouraged by Cards front office that he look around and get a feel of his value price.

Maybe Pujols really likes the Miami Marlins new logo.

The Miami Marlins' new stadium will have a fish tank inside of the backstop.

Albert's a great player and I bet he has some great years left in him, but his numbers will start falling off eventually. He's worth every penny right now, but the back end of that contract is what worries me.

Card's should sign him and retire him as a Cardinal.

Marlins are reinventing themselves as the North Cuba Marlins with new stadium near Little Havana (old Orange Bowl site). Will load up on Hispanic players to market to Miami's Cuban population. That is the plan and Pujols is a perfect target.

Per rotoworld.com:

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that that Marlins' offer to Albert Pujols was "well, well below" $200 million. It was a nine-year proposal, but the average annual salary was not substantial enough for Pujols and his representatives to take it seriously. The Cardinals still look to be the front-runner for the 31-year-old slugger and will remain on top until another team steps forward. Miami's interest was never for real.
