Turned down the 16m option the Cubs exercised saving the Cubs the 2m buyout. Combine that with the 10m Pena got and you can go get Fielder. I know they have bigger needs but big Lefty bat in the heart of the order is what they need to build around.

I hate to see him go but I really don't want to resign him to 3-4 yr/$12 million either. Who are they going to have at third now? I can't even think of who that would be.

It isn't going to matter if they don't find some pitching (looking at you, CJ Wilson). Garza was good last year and the rest of the rotation stunk.

I agree. Unfortunately, the SP market this year is pretty bare and even if they get Wilson, it won't be enough. They're going to need Dempster to not suck this year. I do hope they go after Fielder though.

I think you can pretty much toss this year off to the side. They still aren't going to be a playoff caliber team. However, if they can get CJ Wilson for 3-4 years and get another pitcher or two next year, they're well on their way to competing in that division.

I don't want Wilson. You know what's worse than paying a thirty something firstbaseman a whole bunch of money over a lot of years? Paying a thirty something pitcher a whole lot of money over a lot of years.

How bout Theo somehow dumps Sori and then gets Fielder for 1st and Albert for 3rd  pipe dream at the least, but fun to think

FIFY!

I see the Cubs trading to get David Wright since the Mets are definitely in a rebuilding phase, and signing 2 big name starting pitchers. With the extra money get what you can afford at first base (Fielder or Pena) and have a Colvin/Campana/LaHair rotation in right field.

Wasnt' Vitters (the cubs top pick a few years ago) a third baseman? He could be the answer...

Aramis is one of the few Cubs who can actually hit for power and average, and his salary isn't that bad considering what it would take to replace him. That's great if we get Fielder, but who's going to give us that kind of production at 3rd base? Fielder can't do it all by himself. Somebody mentioned David Wright above, but his numbers haven't been that great the last couple of years, and I would imagine he'll cost at least as much as Ramirez. Bad deal, if you ask me.

The Cardinals didn't win the World Series because of Albert, rather, the rest of the team. Albert is still good, but he is much more streaky than he was 3-4 years ago. Personally, as a Cardinals fan, I question whether my team should sign him to a monstrous deal even. Teams win titles, not one player. The Cubs signing Albert would require a lot more out of rookies and Triple A players, along with depending on how Albert feels that night.

Ramirez salary = $16,000,000
.306 26 93 .361
Wright salary = $15,000,000
.254 14 61 .345
Ugh, I'll take Ramirez.

I think they can go with Vitters and Baker for now at 3rd and see what's available at the deadline.

Hopefully they understand you need to find the right pieces not best available. As long as they keep adding quality I'm fine with 2012 being a rebuilding year.

I think Campana has to play Left not Center, not much of an arm. But Campana, Byrd and Colvin works with Jackson on the verge of coming up.

Pitching going to be the key but they can't over pay for it and dig themselves back in the same hole.

Vitters has struggled a lot through minors, but showed some signs of life last season finally at AA (.281, 14 HR 81 RBI) but there is nothing to say he's the answer now or for the future.

David Wright is an interesting thought, but he's expensive. I have no idea what the plan will be for 3rd because i think ARam is gone for sure.

Could see Theo going for 1-2 starters of the Buerhrle, Pinero, Maholm, etc rage to fill out the rotation. Then maybe take a flyer on a 1 year heavy incentive deal for a guy like Grady Sizemore? And bring back pena. Then guys on the trading block could be Soriano, Z, and Byrd(has some value) and maybe with one of them you can scrounge up a veteran or 2 or swap bad contracts to get something serviceable for 3rd base.

Team is going to struggle mightly this year, and there isnt a quick fix. i think theo's first is just a throw away year to start rebuilding

Aramis quietly put together a pretty solid season individually this year (.306, 26, 93) so I'm not opposed to bringing him back. I don't like the idea of David Wright. He's hurt too much and has kind of fallen back into mediocrity.

The idea of having Blake DeWitt or Jeff Baker as the everyday starting 3B makes me want to puke. They're fine off the bench but not everyday.

LaHair throws right, I wonder if he's playing some third in the fall league?
