I am a little confused. I have been watching football for years and defensive holding has always been an automatic 1st down. Why didn't we get an automatic 1st down when Texa$$ was flagged for defensive holding in the 4th quarter? Did the rules change?

I don't think it's always been an automatic first down for defensive holding. It is in the NFL, but college....not sure.
What I do know is that personal foul penalties that happen during a play, even if they are away from the ball, are always, ALWAYS added to the end of the play. However, that apparently was not the case last night. I believe it was a face mask that Texas was called for away from the ball while they were on defense, but somehow, the officials decided that the yards would not be penalized.
Personal fouls, no matter when and where they happen, ALWAYS result in yardage penalties.

I was watching the BYU game friday night and they were given an automatic first down for defensive holding. The only reason that I can think why the refs didn't for us is that they forgot.
The face mask play was dead at the spot of the crime, because in college the play isbwhistled dead when the carrier loses his head
PF are not always at the end of the play, they just normally are the result of action after the play.

I believe this is it. I looked it up, but was kind of drunk last night. Jantz was sacked on the play, if I'm not mistaken, so the ball was never thrown, making it a run play. I was unaware of this as well until last night.
While we're ********, I have a question. Is face guarding only illegal in the NFL? & if you don't look back on the ball as a DB isn't it an automatic pass interference? On fade route early in game I lost a nut screaming about face guarding in the end zone & some squak fans told me to quit making up rules. Please clarify for me.

Faceguarding doesn't exist in college football. On replay, that Texas defender just made a hell of a play. Nothing we can do about that.
I watched parts of the replay last night after I got home. The officiating wasn't as attrocious as it seemed being at the game. It was more that the staff was total amateur hour in how they ran the game.

The second call on Money was bad and I have no clue how they overturned his catch either. The first holding call was touchy but I get it. The Darks PI was horrible. I thought the officiating was very inconsistent. There was a huge hold on Lattimer? at one point that they missed. It had nothing to do with why we lost but there were some bad calls.
Thanks for info, my first reaction was hella defensive play. It was after replays I noticed the face guarding.
