Commisioner Slive Talks Conference Alignment
Updated 9/12/2011
SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, during a speaking engagement Monday night in Birmingham, Ala., is talking about a variety of topics concerning the Southeastern Conference. One of those topics is conference alignment. Here are those comments:

"In the 78 year history of the SEC, the conference had accepted the membership applications of only two institutions—Arkansas and South Carolina. Texas A&M is now the third. We remain optimistic that Texas A&M will be a member of the SEC and have started to look at schedules for 2012-13 involving 13 teams.

"As I said over the past year or so, the SEC has had no particular interest in expansion. We were, and are, happy with 12 teams. If Texas A&M’s President, Dr. Bowen Loftin had not called me in late July, we had no plans to explore adding an institution.

"However, when President Loftin called we became interested. Texas A&M is an outstanding academic institution with an exceptional athletic program, passionate fans and wonderful traditions. While the SEC wasn't thinking about expansion, it was impossible not to be interested in Texas A&M. As you can see from the unanimous vote of our twelve Presidents/Chancellors, we would very much like to have Texas A&M as a member of our conference.

"When Texas A&M joins our conference, we don't have immediate plans for a 14th member. We aren’t thinking in terms of numbers. We think about the strength of the SEC and the attractiveness of Texas A&M as an institution."

So what's changed? We knew A&M was gone a month ago.

Well, this means the legal aspect was either dropped, or not an issue preventing the SEC from going ahead with its decision.

...which means that the league is either going to be fine...or we are going to blow up and mass re-alignment is about ready to occur.

So, it's still not a done deal??? If TAMU has applied and been accepted, why does the SEC have to remain optimistic about them becoming a member?

So, the most unreliable voices on Twitter are running wild with stories, and nobody official is saying anything.

Whatever happens will happen, but whoever is following most of these people should really consider whether their stuff is worth the time to read.

This sounds like posturing for a Mizzou invite. "We dont have plans for a 14th member"="we're not actively courting mizzou, but in a couple weeks we'll say 'mizzou contacted us about leaving the big 12, and we began exploring the possibility'.

This could just be about closing down the potential for another lawsuit by making it appear that all talk on any further expansion comes from the respective schools, not the SEC.

The real important thing that happened today was the OU board of reagents. If they go then the situation where we are the most f****d is still on the table. That would be OU/OSU/TTech/??? going to the Pac 16 and then KU/KState/Mizzou going to the Big East without ISU.

There are a lot more scenarios where ISU get's into the Big East IMO like OU/OSU/TTech/KU to Pac 16 then Kstate/Mizzou/ISU to the Big East or OU/OSU/TTech/??? to Pac 16, Mizzou to SEC, then ISU/KU/KState to Big East.

????=maybe Texas or the Pac 12/16 pulls some other random school out of nowhere to get to 16.

ISU will come out just fine in this whole thing I bet. I want the BIGXII to stay together, but if it doesn't then I want to get paid and roll right into another competitive BCS conference.

Fingers crossed.

Where are all the twitter feeds saying something new. Nothing posted here yet . . .

Also to get into the Pac 12/16 you would need unanimous approval from schools. That includes Colorado approving old Big 12 teams it was trying to get away from.

Anyone should be proud to get Iowa State in their conference, this thread is a testament to how loyal our fans our to our college and athletics department. Screw the big wigs, we are truly a blue collar hard working college. Again, any conference would benefit from having us, and our fans would show that. Go Iowa State! I'll be behind us no matter what!
