NFL: Jaguars to release starting QB Garrard

A move to get Luck...

I doubt it. They drafted Gabbert this year. I thought that was a questionable move at the time. Garrard is not the best QB in the league, but he's by no means awful. This doesn't make much sense.

I wonder if they even shopped him around? Surprised somebody wouldn't give up a draft pick for him, he'd be a solid backup.

Forgot about that...

No kidding. He'd be a good fit at backup on any number of teams, and probably a candidate to start for several as well. Seattle, Washington, San Francisco, and Miami come to mind. Even a 4th round pick is better than just letting him go.

Interested to here the reasoning behind it. On the surface, it seems about as dumb as the team that fired one of their coordinators a few days prior to the season starting last year. I want to say that was Tennesee but can't recall.

Hope the Chiefs pick him up. No good back up QB's and Cassel might be hurt.

Think I found it:

"a move that will save the franchise $9 million this season."

Maybe they didn't see enough difference between him and McCown to make it worth paying?

I can kind of see that. But, why wait until the last minute, like this. As recently as 2 weeks ago, Del Rio has stated openly that Garrard was his starter. Garrard's been getting all the time with the first string, both in practice and in the pre-season games. That's time that could have been used on McCown or Gabbert. Seems like a waste.

True, none of this makes any sense.

Unless it's this:

Probably slept with someones wife.

If I'm Jones-Drew, I like and hate this move. Like it because he's likely to get more carries, notably early on.

However, dislike because I'm guessing the early part of the season will be especially more painful as McCown/Gabbert get up to speed.

The first half of their season features games @ NYJ, Saints, @ Steelers, Ravens, @ Houston.

Yeah, that's not gonna be fun...especially with McCown and what I assume will be Gabbert after a few games.
