Anyone think we should start blitzing our DBs a bit more? I mean, if you can't cover, get in there and harass someone.

I always felt that most college teams have a hard time dealing with corner and safety blitzes, but very few college teams exploit this.

What do you guys think? We have a solid D line, and good linebackers. Even if a DB doesn't get to the QB, it will open things up for Parker and Curvey. Kind of desperate, but I think our passing D is in a pretty desperate situation. They can't stop anyone. Someone else said it before me, but every QB we face looks like a heisman frontrunner.

We seem to do a fair job at stopping the run, at least outside of the Texas game, and have linebackers who lead the country in tackles. These are both signs of a strong defensive line who is consistantly drawing double teams.

Lack of pressure on the QB is often due to a lack of defensive creativity. Stunts and blitzes, as well as bringing or faking that you are bringing extra pressure can make alot happen for the D line.

Running a 3-4-4 is a matter of personell being able to run it. Many NFL teams found it a disaster switching to it because they didn't have the personnel to implement it properly.

That being said, I do think ISU has the personnel to run it. We have a stud in Curvey playing on the line, and we have very good, very quick linebackers.

Then again, I think against Nebraska it should probably be a 3-3-5 with their passing offense. But I think possibly switching to a base 3-4 could help ISU a lot.
 
I can't stress enough the loss of Nick Leaders. He is the reason Curvey was so good last year. Leaders is one of the best DL we've ever had. Our D-line this year is average at best. Our front is getting any pressure.
 
You honestly want to start blitzing with how our secondary and linebackers have been playing in pass coverage? Seriously...ya want to wreck that kind of havoc on our defense?

Sure, we can blitz...but rarely. If we do it too much, we'll get ate alive. Even on rare occurances, I'd cover my eyes.

On the rare occasions that ISU has blitzed, it has worked well. We blitzed when Texas' QB threw his only pick. Blitzes and stunts are the only way we can get pressure on the QB. We just don't have a good bull-rusher like we had last year with Berryman. I say blitz, stunt, blitz, stunt and then more of the same.
 
You blitz when your front four cannot get pressure on the passer. Then you get killed with the runners. That is why you mix it up, disguise, and keep them guessing. Are we capable of being more than vanilla defense?
 
Someone mentioned that when Nebraska stunted they were burned in front four in a few games. Expect Nebraska to just keep it simple up front and blast away. So we let them blast and sneak out past them.

This is not true.

I am watching the replay right now and on the first drive by UNI, we blitzed twice. Both times we were burnt in the secondary for 1st downs.

In my book, that's not effective.

I would agree. But the fact remains we have hands down one of the worst pass defenses in the entire country and probably the worst of any BCS school. We're beyond stuff just not working. We're into stuff failing to such an immense degree it's downright painful to watch.

I wouldn't mind them mixing up and disguising coverages in an attempt to create some sort of havoc on defense.

Yup, it is very ugly to watch. Lets just pray the modifictions to the defense for this week somehow leads to improvements.

Wow...thats embarrassing. We should be able to get pressure on UNI with 4 guys, and we can't even break through on a blitz?! I wish I'd tivo'd that game, cause I'd like to see that for myself. We must not disguise our blitzes well because there is no excuse for that.

One thing I've seen other schools do well is delayed blitzes....this might work well with our personnel, cause you need fast linebackers to pull it off. However, these sorts of packages usually work well in conjunction with bump and run coverage, which I'm not sure I've seen us do in some time.

This was pretty much my point. If you have a weak secondary and don't get pressure on the QB with vanilla schemes, you get eaten alive by the short passign games and your opponent rack up the yards and pass for like 70% completion rates. Add in some bad tackling and you really have problems.

I would rather they mix it up some, bring some pressure from different directions. Parker is the kind of size and speed he could be switching between LB and DE and standing up on the edge or down in three points off the tackle, dropping into the flat for coverage from the 3 point stance, going from 4-3 to 3-4 and occasionally bringing a safety or a corner.

Playing the base D and just giving up as many yards as we are isn't working, and will work less as the season wears on, and teams start making fewer penalties. At this level, you can't just wait for the other team's O to self destruct. It works in high school, but not D-1A, unless you have a really good offense. Do we have a really good offense?

Mixing up the D can cause more turnovers as well.
