I'm moving to Dallas for job training and will be there anywhere from 6-12 months. What are some nice areas to move to? I don't know Dallas all that well. Is there a sizable ISU alum population there?

Where you going to be at? You want to be somewhere near downtown, north Dallas, Richardson, Plano?

If you want to be close to downtown, there are a lot of nice places in uptown just off lemon and 75. Probably run you around 1200 a month...all depends what you want to pay and where you want to live.

What are you looking for?

Yes, there is a sizable ISU alum population there in raw numbers. But comparative to the overall population its not significant. Sign up for the ISU alumni e-mail list in Dallas and they'll send you gamewatch info. Last year they had it at a place in Addison.

I always hated watching the news in Dallas and see them basically ignore anything non-UT or A&M so that they could cover the Cowboys with half their sportscast. Or even when it was July and they wouldn't bother to show Rangers highlights from their game, but they would spend 4.5 of the 5 minutes in the sportscast talking about what flavor of gum Tony Romo chewed that day. But Dale Hansen on channel 8 will tell you like it is, good or bad. He's from somewhere in western Iowa originally.

I moved to East Texas last year. It is Big 12 territory, and you will find ISU fans in the area. I have not been involved in any alumni organization events... unless you count tailgating in Austin last fall and watching the Cyclones stomp the Longhorns!

I am president of the ISU Club of DFW. This year we will be having 4 game watch locations this fall, (see 3 of them here) plus I just confirmed tonight that we'll have one at the BWW in Grapevine. We have about 3000 alumni in the area. You can visit our Facebook page here.

If you are looking for an apartment in Dallas, I second cyman05's recommendation if you want to be close to downtown, restaurants, bars, etc. Another good place to look is the Dallas North Tollway area between Belt Line Road and the George Bush Turnpike, lots of apartments there, plus nearby Addison has a lot of places to go out to. Las Colinas has apartments too if you're working out that way. If you know where you're working, I'm sure we can give you a good living location.

This pretty much nails it and I've lived in each of these areas. As long as you're withouth children and still young in age, or behvior, these areas are great. I found these areas are also easy to blend into for transplants such as us.

I wouldn't recommend the Las Colinas area personally, but if you work out that way, it's definitely nice with plenty of shopping, restaurants, and nice living accommadations.

I moved a buddy of mine to Addison. Seems like a nice area. There are some nice places there and it seems to be in a good location. I dont live there, so my opinion is from what I gathered over a week spent there.

Thanks for the advice everyone. my office is off of the tom landry highway about 2 miles west of downtown. The downtown area seems nice just, I just dont know enough about the area to determine if its worth it to pay a little extra. I had a friend who said las colinas (sp?) was a nice area and have found a couple places there.

Maybe...

I'm sure there are some great bargains there.

We lived in Arlington, which we really liked, but it really all depends on where the job is.

Yeah, I could see some areas of Oak Cliff being alright and it didn't seem as bad to me as some people think compared to "bad" neighborhoods in other cities, but probably not where a first timer would want to live.

I used to live in Garland, which is a mixed bag itself, but pretty solid for families.

Arlington is great. But given his job location, there will be a traffic headache getting from Arlington to his job.

For a "short term" assignment like the OP has described, I think it would be worth it to pay the extra money (if he can afford it) and live downtown close to his job. Avoid the traffic headache.

Las Colinas & Valley Ranch are both a part of Irving. There is an abundance of nice apartments right near Hwy 114 that would allow for fairly easy access to Tom Landry east toward downtown. The area is filled with young professionals, and is close enough to available nightlife activities. If your stay will be limited, it might be wise to consider the commute issues to work. If you stay on the North side of Dallas(Addison, Plano, Richarson, etc.), staying near the Tollway would give you a 30 minute drive directly South to hit Tom Landry West, but that would not count for heavy traffic and you would pay(toll) to use the road.

My sister-in-law just moved from Carrollton to Kansas City and are still trying to sell their house there. Pretty nice area. They may be up for renting it for 6-12 months if they can't sell it in this market. Let me know if you want more information.

Las Colinas is a very nice area with good access downtown via the John Carpenter expressway.

I actually live in Carrollton now, nice place to live, good neighborhoods and low crime rate. It's one of the interior suburbs so to most places it's pretty accessbile, but I wouldn't live there if I had to head west of downtown everyday. Carrollton is pretty lousy for shopping, restaurants, bars, etc. Good place to live, but you need to seek out Addison, Dallas, and Plano for shopping and food and fun.

Las Colinas makes a lot of sense for the OP. The MacArthur Blvd cooridor between 114 and 635 is pretty decent area for a transplant. Not too difficult to get to downtown Dallas or even downtown Fort Worth for that matter. Centralized location. The Byron Nelson PGA tournament is in Las Colinas every May too, good party.

What's your budget?

If you're only going to be here short term, then spend the extra money and do it right. Live in uptown or downtown. I currently live in uptown and work in downtown. Nothing beats the short commute, and there are a ton of bars within walking distance.
