MLB: Twins trade Delmon Young to Tigers

Well, I'm not sure there has ever been anything more predictable than that Delmon Young bomb right there.

Saw that coming a mile away. Nice cookie Liriano.

Any chance he can be the player to be named later? :jimlad:

Well, they weren't likely at all to offer him a contract this offseason anyway. Might as well get something for him. Save 1.3 million and maybe a small chance of one of the minor leagues doing something.

Bigger deal I think is the $6 to $7 million they won't be paying him next year that can go into the No.1 Starter/middle inf/CuddyerKubel kitty.

Should be up to somewhere around $35 mil to spend now (and that assumes flat payroll, and not even modest increase)

Well, he wasn't going to be tendered a contract anyway, so that 6 or 7 million didn't exist.

I haven't looked closely at the payroll, but where are you getting 35 million? I know Capps won't be back, but they are already talking to Cuddyer and Kubel. I think they'll pay to keep Kubel and I think there is a decent chance to sign Cuddyer at a slight discount, given how much he likes Minnesota.

Nathan is a question mark. I think they'll keep him, but hopefully cheaper.

The Star Tribune has put the "back of the napkin" number at $83 million for base payroll next year in numerous different articles and blogs.

That was assuming none of the free agents return, but also assumes estimates for raises for all arbitration eligible players. That would include Delmon, thus, the 6 to 7 million will make a difference.

I mean, how would it not exist? 6 mill to delmon, or a few hundred thousand to Tosoni? His roster spot is going to be roughly 6 mil cheaper next year.

If you take the $83 million, now you lose Delmon from the arb guys, you're down to around $77 million.

Slowey and Liriano? If they're traded or non-tendered, then the number goes even lower.

Even if you assume payroll makes no jump from the 113ish this year, 113-77= 36 million to play with to fill out the roster.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. So basically its probably $77 with Delmon gone. However, they offered Cuddyer 2 year for 8 million per. Lets say they get that and Kubel for 10 million a year.

I wonder what starting pitchers will be availabe. The hitters look okay. Mauer, Morneau, Casilla, Valencia, Nishi, Revere, Span, Cuddyer and Kubel starting. Butera, Plouffe, Tolbert on the bench. Maybe get a veteran with a little bit of pop.

65.75 million is committed for next year:
Mauer 23
Morneau 14
Pavano 8.5
Baker 6.5
Blackburn 4.75
Span 3
Nishioka 3
Nathan's buyout 2 mil(or 12 million if they pick up the option)

Arbitration eligible:
Liriano- 4.3 this year
Slowey- 2.7 this year
Casilla .865
Perkins .700
Repko .600
Tolbert .400
Mijares .450

This the raises due to the arbitration eligibles figure around 80 million committed to next year(barring a Slowey trade which is certainly possible).
Kubel and Cuddyer, I'm estimating, are going to cost 7-10 million each if the Twins choose to resign them.

Great spreadsheet that spells out everything for contracts.

Good idea where the money is.
11.25 mil Nathan
10.5 mil Cuddyer
7.5 mil Capps
5.25 mil Kubel
3 mil Thome

37.5 mil all off the books from free agents. + 6 mil off of Delmon's spot (Delmon being replaced by Revere or Tosoni).

Brings an estimate 43 mil in payroll off.

.5 mil contracted raise to Pavano
1.5 mil contracted raise to Baker
1.75 to contracted raise Blackburn
2 mil to contracted raise Span

5.75 total contracted raises, lowers the flexibilty to 37 mil...sub another few mil for arb raises and it should be around 35 million free...again assuming payroll doesn't bump up another 5-10 mil.

Love to see at least one of Cuddy/Kubel back.
Number 1 starter has to be addressed.
Middle INF needs reworked.
Don't touch bullpen until after all that is done. May bring back Nathan if he takes huge paycut, but don't even think about spending serious money on the BP at the expense of the more important issues.

Hopefully the 19 mil they have tied up in Nathan/Capps can be much more wisely used next year. For 19 mil they could get a legit 1 and bring back Nathan.
