Stoops certainly has plenty of incentive to stay in the Big 12, I won't deny that. But I don't think he's afraid of competition, either.

Being brave and being smart aren't mutually exclusive.

The Big Ten and Pac Ten had the easiest path to the National Championship for years. Now the Big 12 has it. Actually, for OU and Texas the path is now the clearest of any team in the nation. In years where Missouri or gasp...ISU...wins it the league would be called down and even an unbeaten champ might struggle to make a title game.

Being a strong conference with some legit contenders, and no playoff game, is the best route to the NC. Stoops and Brown both know that. Tressel knew it when he had that clearest path at OSU.

The conference has to seem legit with historic programs as champ, the Big East certainly does not have the easiest path just from not having a title game because most could see it wasn't even as strong as the MWC the past few years.

I hadn't really thought about this scenario very much, but IMO it seems likely we might get it on that action. I mean, who else would they be able to entice into joining that league? Would any decent programs leave the comfort of their current BCS conferences to sign up for an unknown entity?

If A&M and OU bolt for the SEC, wouldn't the UT/ND conference simply start with the Big 12 leftovers? I know teams like ISU and BU don't bring a whole lot to the party, but who else would come on board? FSU? Miami? UNC? Kind of doubt it. They're also not going to stoop low enough to start asking teams like Tulsa, SMU, Rice, etc. (would they?)

This is just one of the many reasons ISU is far from screwed in all of this.
 
Hmmm interesting, I could see The Big Twelve crumble this time which means what for ISU? Sorry, but is Oklahoma Really committed same with Mizzou? Are they saying this cause they know what is on the back burner?

I'm trying to figure out why some posters would think it would be a bad thing for that team to be a Big 12 team. Maybe bad for us in that we'd have to compete with a team with it's own national network (it's more national than LHN right now), but how could that be bad for the overall strength of the Big 12 or mean that team isn't worthy of membership?

I really wouldn't mind going to 11, could keep the 9 game season with one team off each year. The B10 didn't have a huge issue with 11 and 8 games for a long time. When Missouri or A&M bolt I'd rather already have a team with national cache added to bring stability. There's one team out there more than worthy, why not grab them now? They were a bit of a media darling in hoops this year too, in case anyone didn't turn on ESPN for 3 seconds the entire winter last year.

If someone like Delaney or Pollard were running the Big 12 they'd have been a member the minute Nebraska/CU left.

The best part of grabbing BYU as opposed to any other major team? BYU and Notre Dame are the only major programs out there that can be added without automatically triggering another round of conference musical chairs. Every round of musical chairs is a chance for something bad to happen to ISU.

Agree, and I believe that we may come out of this process in a better shape than we went in. I am convinced that we need to get the SEZ done ASAP, to help ensure our future in a BCS league.

BTW, does anyone know what the record for longest thread on CF is? This one is pretty long.
 
I hope we come out of this mess better as well just not sure that will happen, but who knows at this point. We will know more later this afternoon, but I have a lot of faith in Jamie!!

So you will instead be getting your sports fix from pro sports where they are there for the love of the game, are loyal to their teams / fanbase and don't care about the money at all???

At least pro sports are honest about their intentions, and aren't hiding their money-grabbing intentions behind charters and mission statements that claim the well being of the athlete as a primary concern.
