Scoreboard update: UNI Preparations?

Remember when you bought that first computer for $3000 and then 5 years later it was worthless.

Think how you will feel when you dump $5 mil.

took this Sunday from the student lots, kinda near the 16th St. entrance

Yeah, it will be really annoying if 1/3 of our new video board is permanently reserved for ads.

Yeah.. you lose a lot of space there. Yeah, our new video board is a lot larger than the old one, but if part of it is always ads then the difference in effective space is less (since the old ads werent part of the video board)

Thats where somewhere down the road it might be nice to widen the video screen by a section (it looked like there was plenty of space to do that and still have the speakers.. the speakers dont take up much space) and put the ads there.

So where are you putting the speakers if the video board is extended? Honestly, I always thought Jack Trice had a sound problem, not a video problem (although, outside of major replays, I'm not a person that sees much use for the huge boards).

And if you're only planning to put in stats and more ads, is it really worth it? Ads are still rotated on the current board and a larger size likely wouldn't sell for much more (and certainly wouldn't pay for the difference in cost for a larger board). The smaller scoreboards around the arena are perfect in my mind for scrolling stats and out-of-town games.

I agree with you that it would not be worth the money and that sound was the huge problem in Jack Trice. I was simply responding to the person who said it would be "goofy as hell" to have a video board that wasn't a 16x9 aspect ratio. If money really were no object I think you could do some pretty cool things with wider board.

Everyone that has seen the videoboard in person says it looks great and is great in size.

Why after all these threads do we still have to listen to people that haven't seen it complain?

I saw it last week and it will be great. Still very excited to hear the new sound system!!!!!!!

I think there may be some that do not realize that the new speakers are behind the logo panels. So it's not like there is nothing behind the panels that could have been used for more video board.

The entire length of the structure that spans over the top of the Jacobson Building is being used for something. Whether it be better video or better sound.

Sorry to crap on your thread. I appreciate the intention to be positive, so I deleted my first reply.

I don't think it was you alone, and I'll also admit to being possibly overly sensitive to the negativity.

Personally, although I'll admit we have miles to go, I could hardly be happier with ISU's progress over the last several years. We have 2 coaches in the moneymaker programs that seem to want to be here, and seem like they can do what is needed, and are what the programs need. Likewise, looking at FOF, videoboard, and Sukup, it's great that we can do the things that are highest on our priority list. Can we do everything on our wish list, probably not. But I remember when we could barely, if at all, do the most important things. Honestly, I remember reading the Daily and the statements that the students tearing down the goalposts just makes it that much harder to do the things they wanted to do. Goalposts seriously impacted our budget, it seemed. You can't build Sukup, FOF, or videoboard if goalposts move the needle on the athletic budget.

Are we in paradise, no...by no means. Until we stop regularly getting picked in the bottom 3 for football, and we maybe actually contend for the top of the conference in MBB, I won't be satisfied, but it's a far cry from where we have been. There's actually a light on at the end of the tunnel, IMHO.

Because of this, and all the Big 12 Armageddon talk for the second year, I get tired of the constant negativity. Don't take it personally, I don't think it's any one poster, just an overall feeling of the mood at times.

Final thought for now: Here's another screenshot for perspective:

I agree 100%.

I don't understand the constant negativity. Sure we have a history of the Charlie Brown syndrome, but get over it. In the end, it starts to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Good things are happening and if you have a good attitude, even when things aren't perfect, you will feel better about everything in the AD.

Yeah, it gets old. We haven't seen the "We are Iowa State" post word-for-word for a while, but the idea is still there.

The past is not necessarily prologue. If it is, what's the point? But programs have built themselves into powers when they had no history. Look to the East. They've done OK, and they were worse off than we are. It can be done.

I don't know, ISU has been replacing their video boards in both JTS and Hilton every 10 years or so. I would bet that expenses like this are written into the budget.

easy way to fix this...
