Rather than hijack the verizon thread,

I'm looking at upgrading to an Android phone through US Cellular. Their coverage areas suit me better.
Any recommendations based on experience?

Does anyone use theirs for teathering to a laptop?

I currently have a US Cellular phone and a Verizon USB modem for internet. I'd like to get rid of the USB and use a USC smartphone for internet. The modem meets my needs but I'd rather have one, lower bill. I may wait until their new phones come out this fall, but then again I may not.

I'm on Verizon but the US Cellular coverage is awesome in the Midwest. I have to use my sister-in-laws Android phone to tether to my DROID Incredible so I can get a decent download speed when we're at the lake (in Southwest Iowa). Not sure which phone she has. Kinda looks like a Galaxy S but not sure. My mother-in-law has one too and they are very nice phones whatever they are.

I have the Samsung Mesmerize. It's not bad, and probably considered one of the best right now. Depending on your need, I would wait till fall. They have 8 phones coming out, including a HTC, Motorola and maybe 2 or 3 Samsungs. I tether mine fairly often and it works great. You can connect up to 5 devices. The HTC Merge doesn't look bad either. Battery life isn't the best, but it's not terrible either.

Mesmerize.

I'm not too high on the current crop of phones. If you can wait a bit, they should be getting the Desire 2, a 4" phone (similar to the Motorola Photon), something similar to the LG G2X and a successor to the Mesmerize. If you had to get one right now, I'd say go with the Mesmerize.

I got a Samsung Memorize Galaxy from US Cellular in May. I like it a lot.

I have the Samsung Mesmerize and it is the best phone I have had. They did have issues with it about 4-5 months ago when the update came out updating the Froyo(sp) from 2.1 to 2.2 when I starting missing calls quite a bit. Took US Cellular forever to come out with the fix but it is out so that problem should be resolved. I went on XDA Developers website and found the leaked update about 3 weeks before US Cellular came out with it and fixed it myself because I didn't like the LG android phone they gave me as a loaner.

I also subscribe to the tethering ($25/month) because my work puts me at a farmers table quite often and I don't have to worry about trying to get hooked up on his internet. It's actually quite a bit faster than I figured it would be so I am impressed with it. I also know it wouldn't take much to root the phone and be able to tether for free but haven't gotten to that point yet. Works great on long trips with the kids too. The wife can cruise the internet on her laptop and the kids can play on their Ipod touch while we are heading down the highway.

Long story short.....another vote for the mesmerize

I have the HTC desire and have not had any issues. I rooted the phone and use the wi fi tethering and it works great!

I use mobile hot spot. No tethering, no paying. Are you paying for that????

By the agreement you signed with USCellular, you are supposed to pay for that (mobile hotspot IS tethering). It ends up being "on your honor", because they don't seem to have any way to track whether you use it or not. Even so, it's still a (stupid!) violation of your agreement. I say it's stupid because they limit your data usage anyway.

I'm in exact same situation with US Celllular (not smart phone) and with Verizon USB modem for internet. I've been tempted to switch to an I Phone on Verizon as we have several other family members on Verizon and eventually could lower the plan (minutes). Why are you sticking with US Cellular? I almost bought the Mesmerize a while back but decided to wait. Will likely take another look this fall.

I have 5GB limit. Weird, because verizon can track it. I have tethered Blackberries in the past and no just use hotspot on Android, you don't have to pay a dime.
