Iowa player Willie Lowe still ailing, requests release - ESPN

Nothing to see here, right?

I took a minute to jump over to HN to see what they thought of it, color me shocked that a few posters over there are rationalizing the issue by saying the kid is leaving because he got jumped on the depth chart (not due to losing 20 pounds from rhabdo of course) and that he obviously just wants to get paid through a law suit. It never ceases to amaze and disgust.

Keith Murphy tweeted something related to hearing that it was due to being jumped on the depth chart also. Like you said, though....that depth chart issue could have something to do with the whole 20 pounds lost thing.

I think this is probably the most likely answer. I can't imagine losing that much weight and NOT getting jumped. Lowe wasn't all that big to begin with. I don't know if he would have been jumped anyway or not (the word on Lowery has been VERY positive), but the weight loss can't possibly have helped the issue. The headaches were what caught me by surprise. The weight loss, while pretty shocking in amount, is expected with a lengthy hospital stay (particularly with a disease like that). But headaches every couple days? Didn't see that coming.

I have no idea what position Willie Lowe plays, but being down 20 pounds (I assume a weak feeling and feeling tired go hand in hand with this) and constant headaches would make it difficult to perform paperwork, let alone high level college football.

Well then it is a good thing that this is so common like you have repeatedly said. That way the medical staff has all kinds of examples of what to do for these symptoms.

The fact that the inbred losers like the ones that are saying that he left the team because he got jumped on the depth charts are the typical lowlife pieces of **** fans that everyone associates with the u.

I mean, you almost kill 13 players, but it's ok because insert standard loser pos hawk excuse that is used for all of the other legal problems.

He plays/ed cornerback. He was listed right around 200, IIRC. So 20 pounds is a HUGE deal to a player like that. There is no way he could play being that underweight.

Hawk fans already showing their class in the Comments section of the ESPN article. Glad they are putting their DBaggery on display for a national audience.

Reading that ESPN article, I get the impression that Lowe is considering a lawsuit. Something tells me a good lawyer would tear Iowa's "self investigation" apart in court.

Another banner day in Eastern Iowa.

He mentions that he isn't even sure if he will be able to play again and that he is getting a second opinion from another doctor. If that turns out to be true (I hope it is not for the kid's sake), then I'd say he is going to have a pretty good case against the U.

I predict a transfer and a settlement. I'm guessing neither side actually wants to go through a trial. I think it would be pretty hard to prove that the workout caused him to not be able to play football anymore. I also think Iowa would like this to go away.

yes it is obvious. The reason I put that in there was because I think if they really wanted to fight it they would have a pretty good shot of winning the case. But unless Lowe asks for an unreasonable amount of money I think it would be worth settling and not have it constantly in the news going forward.

Here are some of the classier quotes from the HN thread:

Lowe wasn't going to play, it is unfortunate that he now sees an easy payday

It has more to do with the fact he was getting jumped on the depth chart by more talented underclassmen than Rhabdo

He got passed on the depth chart, so it appears he is choosing to cash in.

If he was high on the depth chart, there is no way that he would have been doing this.

Need to get rid of the weak, out of shape players. Cut the fat!

Transferring won't help him heal but it will keep him from looking into the eyes of his teammates when they are all doing things honorably

Iowa has a legit need at safety this fall. Ive read (unsure if it speculation or from KF) that Bernstine or Hyde gets moved from corner to safety this fall......Iowa needs corners from what I understand.

I just don't see the kid quiting this early in the process because hes spiraling down an extremely early depth chart at his position.

The "cut the fat" post was meant in sarcasm, or at least I'm pretty sure it was. Nobody is THAT stupid.

And I think that his position on the depth chart may have contributed to the decision. It was hardly THE reason (obviously THE reason would be rhabdo and the aftereffects thereof), but it's possible that it was a contributing factor to some degree.

The rest of those posts are just garbage, especially the last one.

The depth chart argument is a pretty weak one. So he wasn't on the spring 2 deeps? Everbody knows those are set in stone. :jimlad:

and speaking of sarcasm, if the "cut the fat" post wasn't serious, then I apologize. There's a whole lot of ******** floating around that thread, and after reading some of the others, I couldn't be sure of what was serious.

Iowa football player Willie Lowe still may remain on the team, despite being granted an official release of his scholarship, according to a family member.
“If I had to guess right now, I’d say Willie goes through the process of seeing if there are other options, and then at the end of the day, sticking with the Iowa program,” Lowe’s uncle, Troy Fultz, told the Des Moines Register this morning. “That’s what Willie is thinking right now.”

Here's another super classy post from HN

I wish we would have kicked all the players that ended up in the hospital off of the team. If you can't stay in shape over a three week break that really shows your dedication to the team. We need to cut the weak links before we have another season full of 4th quarter collaspes.

Have any Hawks who have ever went to the NFL ended up in the hospital after doing the same workout? Nope, but underachieving guys like Bernstein and Lowe end up there, I don't think thats a coincidence.

I don't know about that; there are enough comments like that over there that it doesn't seem to be sarcastic.
