Those of you writing off the past decade need to forget about what's getting put onto the radio. In the 90's, great music still made the charts.

There's great music coming out this decade that just doesn't have any commercial success. There are some notable exceptions like Jack White, or the Black Keys, but I'd say the music still getting made is just as strong, it's just that none of the good stuff is making the airwaves.

There was **** music in every one of these decades, but like they say, the cream always rises. Who knows what kids born this decade will think of the 00's? I was born in the 80's and think the 70's were the best decade for music. Part of this is due to bands that weren't really getting much airplay back then, but it was great music and it stood the test of time.

****whips out his Olivia Newton John collection******

I'll go with the 70's. You had Zeppelin, Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, Queen, Skynyrd, Eagles, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, KISS, the Beatles split up and doing solo stuff. For non rock fans you had Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the Bee Gees cranking out hits.

There's probably more solid bands from the decade that I'm forgetting. So much good music and legendary albums

Most of the Bands you mentioned got their starts in the 60's:

Zeppelin,
Stones,
Who,
Pink Floyd
Stevie Wonder
Marvin Gaye
Bee Gees
and the Beatles group stuff well exceeds their solo output in quality and consistency.

That was early 80's. Im not going to lie, she is still kinda hot.

Don't get me wrong I've always thought she was stunning...when I saw the name I just thought of the video and cringed. I should have thought of her in the tough girl outfit at the end of Grease

Those bands got their start in the 60's but were in their prime in the 70's (Pink Floyd and Zeppelin especially). It's the understatement of the century to say that the Beatles stuff as a group was better than their solo stuff, i think everybody knows that

I personally think this is an unfair question. It depends on what type of music you like. Because If you like Rock it is most likely the 70s if you like rap/ hip-hop it's the '00s. If you like crazy hair it's the 80s. It just depends on what you're listening to.

I also do not agree with people saying there is not talent anymore. I will agree that some of the new music is absolute crap. But the talent kind of shows up in different ways. for instance many people may not like Hip-Hop but if you take the time to listen and read lyrics from someone like Eminem there is a lot of artistry there. I'm just saying there is talent it's just not showing up in the same ways that it used to.

They started in the 60's, but they were releasing their best music in the 70's. Bands careers can span more than one decade.

Part of why the 00's have some great music is that bands that started in the 80's and 90's put out some great albums in this past decade.

This is a great post with a good point. A lot of the good music does not get air play. The same was certainly true int he 80s. So many good bands were popular on college radio but could not really break the charts or had limited success on the charts. I think the 80s are tops, there is a lot to discover there if one takes some time to investigate. Lot of music with intelligent lyrics and great hooks and melodies. So many good bands, so many good bands from the UK. Anyone remember the late Sunday night show on MTV 120 Minutes?

Woah. Whoah. Woah. Bolded statement is just plain false.

Agreed. Rappers still going like Nas, Jay-Z, Dre, etc. all put out their best stuff in the 90's. 2Pac and Biggie were also exclusively 90's. Eminem's first CD was his 2nd best in my opinion, and I believe off the top of my head it came out in 1999 as I was in 8th grade and recall hiding it from my parents.

No mention of Cream, Derek and the Dominos, or just Eric Clapton himself?

I went to a Clapton concert in Kansas City last March. By far the best concert I have ever been to.

Truth.

There were some great bands in the 80's that never really became popular in their time. I love the Replacements, and their best stuff all came out in the 80's.

90s for me - like others have said your age probably has more to do with this than anything else.

But I will take Alice in Chains with Nirvana any day!

Wiat a minute, you are 100% right and yet you are only using the latter half of the sixties. In the earlier part of the sixties you had the maturation of Doo Wop, Folk music which rallied social conscience, Rockabilly which included Elvis, and the Blues splitting into Rhythm and Blues, Soul, and Jazz. All of these genres and the artists you mentioned came about in the 60's which I think makes it the greatest generation for music. A good example is Folk music. Not only did it have a big impact on culture (personal experience btw), it spawned folk/rock which led to acid rock and on to heavy metal music although metal was more 70's.

This is/was true of all decades. There is some crazy good 60's stuff that never got a whiff of airplay, for example, Love had one minor hit but their album Forever Changes is now considered a classic. Same with the Zombies Oddysey and Oracle. There's a whole subculture of people who only collect Northern Soul, most that never touched the charts. Same with 50's and early 60's doo-wop.

As far as the best combination of good music that actually got PLAYED in public on radio and HEARD in the decade it was produced, it is probably the 60's again.

You are totally correct. I didn't delve into the pre-Beatles 60's. Phil Spectre, Girl Groups. I totally LOVE doo-wop. Roy Orbison.

I also left off Rascals, Lovin' Spoonful, Turtles, Aretha (okay, she's part of Atlantic soul scene). Gene Pitney, Donovan, Leslie Gore (she could sing!), and lots more good Brit acts/groups (Hollies, Peter and Gordon, Manfred Mann, Pretty Things, Sandie Shaw)

I also love 50's/60's R&B and soul.

You are totally correct. I didn't delve into the pre-Beatles 60's. Add Phil Spectre, Girl Groups. I totally LOVE doo-wop. Roy Orbison. Darlene Love, Arthur Alexander.

I also left off Rascals, Lovin' Spoonful, Turtles, Aretha (okay, she's part of Atlantic soul scene). Gene Pitney, Donovan, Leslie Gore (she could sing!), and lots more good Brit acts/groups (Hollies, Peter and Gordon, Manfred Mann, Gerry/Pacemakers, Pretty Things, Deep Purple)

I also love 50's/60's R&B and soul and love Rock-a-billy, too!

Lets add the Bacharach/David composed stuff (Dionne Warwick, Sandie Shaw, Love, BJ Thomas all had hits with these.
